I always get excited when someone name checks Be Bop Deluxe.. It should be illegal not to own the "Sunburst Finish" and "Live In The Air Age" albums. Bill Nelson was, and still is, a fabulous guitarist and brilliant musician. If you've not heard of him before, I strongly urge you to invest 7 minutes of your time here ~

Bask in the glorious liquid playing of Bill Nelson on a Gibson 345 Stereo, in this live recording of "Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape" (Great Fender Rhodes playing too by Andy Clarke):

Good call dharma47 8)

Thanks dharma47 and Adey for the Be Bop Deluxe recommendation - fantastic stuff.

Cheers!

Rush would sound so much better if Geddy Lee didn't sing high soprano. That has been the only thing that has prevented me from buying any of their albums.I'm glad that Be Bop De Luxe were mentioned-I forgot to mention them but they are one of the primo prog rock bands.

Oh yes..

"Entangled" from this album just destroys me. The mellotron and synth climax always takes me to another place.. Magnificent..

Prog-rock is one of the genres that I should like (excellent musicianship, technically challenging performances and deep, poetic lyrics), but it just doesn't move me for the most part. I like individual songs by many of the better-known bands mentioned here, but I just can't get into the genre as a whole.

I'll give anything a second/third/fourth swing, but right now that's one genre that just doesn't do it for me.

Maybe I'm just too simplistic. :?

Ha! Gotta admit, that's kinda how I feel too. I did get into Rick Wakeman's Six Wives of Henry the Eighth when it came out and have it on my iPod - but I tend to go hide deep in a dark forest if I want to listen to it so nobody catches me at it...

Now this thread is making me feel very narrow minded and I'm going to use some of the suggestions to challenge myself on this stuff. So thank you all for that!

If I make some progress (...), well, I inherited my late brother's vast collection of prog CDs and I guess I could pay them some attention. For starters, I have about a yard of Yes waiting on the shelf I've never quite got round to attacking...

C'mon, Ceri! Go to!

Cheers - C

Fragile :) Back in my DBDH days(desert boots, denim's & hair) think i learned every note, so many hours, days and weeks lifting that needle back and forth a couple of groove's at a time.

Ah. See, I think right back at the start patchouli oil and loon pants may have been critical stumbling blocks for me on all of this. That, and the spectacle of Rick Wakeman wearing a sparkly evening dress and Peter Gabriel dressed as a flower.

And Yes cover art. And... And...

...Oh my! I'm suddenly feeling the need for a Clash album - quick!

Cheers - C
