For those too young to remember, here's a look at the Godfathers of the term "progressive rock". My, my how things have digressed in the last 35 years.

dunedindragon, the Godfathers of prod-rock definitely, I saw them in London at the Crystal, palace?, in early 1974 they performed most of that album .
Jimi Hendrix once told Walter Parazaider woodwinds player for the band CTA, "Jeez, your horn players are like one set of lungs and your guitar player is better than me." They changed their name to Chicago after their debut album. Here is Terry Kath playing his Telecaster in the studio, watch out for your ears, lol:

I'm afraid I'd have to agree with Jimi on that. Terry Kath's guitar work on "25 or 6 to 4" is one of the most brilliant efforts I've ever heard recorded.

Argent is one of my favorite bands and I have posted links to a few of their songs but going through the posts I've discovered that some of the accounts associated with those links have been terminated. Still writing about Argent, some years ago there was a thread about Rock and Roll royalty, I wondered if John Grimaldi (guitarist who replaced Russ Ballard) was part of the Grimaldi family. Wiki: "John Grimaldi (May 1955 to Nov 1983) was a musician, songwriter and artist. He was born in St.Albans, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, and was linked to the Grimaldi's of Monaco."
I also wondered why Argent stopped playing. Wiki: "The band's decision to stop touring late in 1976 has never been fully explained, though the decision might have been influenced by the declining health of one of its members." that may have been John, or drummer Robert Henrit who was ill during the recording of Counterpoints.
Here is a song from the album Counterpoints, writing credited to John Grimaldi:

For an elaborated explanation and history of progressive rock, I found this to be helpful.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock

On that note, perhaps this counts as progressive rock?

Guru Josh:

I introduced my father to Guru Josh's album when he was in his 70s, and he drove my mom crazy because it was always played in his car. My Dad liked Zappa too. When I was young he introduced me to all forms of music. The tables turned. :D

And maybe this by Yello?

FSB, quite a wiki article there very cool. I read as much as I could until it got bloviatorial and my ADHD kicked in, lol . So, with tongue in cheek a quote from Frank Zappa "shut up and play yer guitar".

I hear ya SBLS. But, as we used to say at work, "I didn't design the dang thing, I just operate it"

Great topic and posts though.

ELP are very much in the foundation of progressive rock, but I struggle with them being the "godfathers" of it. To me, that crown has to go to either Yes (my pick) ... or I would be okay with it going to King Crimson, Jethro Tull or maybe even Genesis with Peter Gabriel. ELP was not as early as any of those, and I think that is a prerequisite to be called "godfather". Don't mean to quibble ... just my $0.02 ...

I would add other bands before ELP, Keith emerson, Greg Lake and Palmer all came from earlier attempts in the Prog genre. But Renaissance predated ELP as so did Fairport Convention.
Early Uriah Heep may also be in that category as well as Jethro Tull. Point is the aforementioned bands emerged in the late sixties whereas ELP was the 70's.
On the american side Quicksilver Messenger Service was more in the progressive than the R/B Rock mold.

As for John Grimaldi being related to the Grimaldi's of Monaco, It's a remote cousin relation at best. I don't recall hearing his name or band ever mentioned within my family or friends. But the lineage descends from Italy and it is a rather large and lengthy family tree.
And Yes the Grimaldi's were always a topic of conversation at the dinner table, might have had something to do with my uncle's father being high up in the actual Monegasque government.

Any way back to music...

Never got to see them, then again never saw ELP, Genesis ( Gabriel period, The Musical Box ) or Fairport Convention.....

But on a bit of a tangent I will say that Alisson Kraus and Robert Plant may have been as close as what Sandy Denny would have sounded like live ...

Rock music's giant head did an exorcist spin when it heard this band play this song.
