Okay, a couple of things here ...

1) Triumph is not progressive. That being said, their "Just A Game" album is a fabulous must-have hard rock album (their best studio work by far). Their earlier stuff was way better than the later stuff. And the reason Rush (that "other" Canadian power trio) overshadowed them is because Rush is farrrrrrrr better. Don't get wrong -- I like Triumph, and a collection of their best songs is on my iPod, and I still listen to it.

2) I always found it astounding that Kansas never seems to come up in these prog rock discussions (and if someone posted earlier and I did not see it, then I apologize). When Kansas was at their best, they were EASILY one of the very best hard rock prog rock bands. If you are wanting to check out some Kansas, their "Two For The Show" live album is a very good recording and captures their best material all in one place. Beyond that, their best studio albums were "Left Overture" and "Point of Know Return". Their earlier studio albums are really good, too.

3) An obscure but amazing band/album from the 1980s by Steve Howe (Yes) & Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis) was "GTR". This was intended to be another Asia of sorts, but actually was WAYYY better than Asia. For me, I still listen to GTR on my iPod and will never cue up Asia. Even though GTR had some pop leanings (like Asia did), the songs were very strong and not so pop. It is a great album and a terrible shame that GTR never really found their audience like Asia did -- they never made a follow up.

4) Someone mentioned Todd Rundgren. But Todd had a prog-band project called Utopia. I love this band. Utopia was amazing. You need to check out Utopia.

Wow, the Michael Douglas show and "Love Is The Answer". That actually sounds much more Rundgren solo-ish to me. Check out this for a slightly different side to Utopia:

I am pretty sure Rush is considered progressive rock. My dad loves them.

I've been listening to some modern (mostly Scandinavian) prog: Kaipa, Beardfish, Magic Pie, Nemrud, Fright Pig.

Ayreon is worthy too.

I listen to a lot of old live Rick Wakeman. He's got a big tour coming up in a couple months with orchestra... Can't wait for the live recordings to surface.

I would say just hard rock.
I was (and still am) a huge Purple fan. I believe I have every record they ever recorded.
The only Purple song I know of that comes close to prog rock territory would be Child In Time.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I'd say that Anthem is definitely prog too. Certainly not heavy metal nor pop (despite some Beatles influence):

Recently I've been listening to the late '70s group U.K..

I had seen their first album around, but I don't remember ever hearing it over the years. I haven't been able to buy used copies of the vinyl, but their LPs are on YouTube and I have found some old FM recordings from their US tour.

John Wetton became the voice of Asia a few years later, but U.K. doesn't sound like Asia. To me, U.K. is more progressive, less commercial/pop than Asia. Too bad the original lineup, featuring Bruford and Holdsworth, only put out the one album.
