I just read this topic from beginning to end. We must add Gentle Giant to the list of real prog rock bands. They were not well known, and you either loved them or hated them.

So they were not mentioned ? A shame :o Good you did ,Sandy - thanks for posting ! Both great tracks which I don't think I've heard in 30 years  I loved them. But just in limited portions ! They were kind of Zappa-ish , genious !

Those were both awsome. Loved the last 20 seconds on the second one. LOL!! Thanks for posting. I'd never heard of that band but thats the cool thing about progressive rock; most of the bands are so obscure that 99% of people have never heard of them. Now I hafta do some iTunes searching, I guess. Actually no. Amazon. Something like this I'll want on disc. Could be some pics and liner notes.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Thanks asgeirman, Santana took everybody to school back in the old days, lol. Just like the Beatles 6 years prior, people then were surprised at British rock and roll then excited because it was good, similarly Santana brought the latin vibe and even the wallflowers caught the beat.
Here is another rock genre unto themselves band 8)

Pink Floyd - Echoes / Live at Pompeii ( full )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGwPSPIhohk&feature=colike

Santana was (is) great. Hot vibes even transmitted to the cold north
I remember those Pompeii sessions from the TV those days - I was an astonished kid watching  Later i bought that on VHS. Thanks for the link! PF are to me one of the really GREATEST bands , ever.
Then there is Enid - thanks for sharing fuzzyscot - just heard of them. Got to check it out !
The same goes for The Mustard Seeds, Stroker...
BMW- GG had some nice cover art , as I remember it - well worth a look . I remember the album Octopussy - that was a work of Roger Dean - same as the Yes/Uriah Heep a.o.

I'm kind of surprised nobody mentioned Coheed and Cambria yet (unless I missed it). Are they too heavy to be progressive?

Gryphon was a Prog-Rock band that was hardly known at all in the Americas, but their music even pre-dated ELO and King Crimson.Ther used Bassoons, cellos and a myraid of other orchestral instruments in their music. They were the avant garde of musicians who mixed classical and baroque music with rock and made sure that the result was astounding. If you ever see the album Queen's Pawn To Red Gryphon 4,pick it up,especially if you are drawn to King Crimson,EL&P,Gentle Giant,ELO etc.
