Well.. I hate to tell you this, but he's kinda right in one aspect. There are very few instrumentals that end up being popular. It's just a fact of life. Being guitar players, we generally don't like that fact but it is pretty much true. I saw Steve Vai here in Vegas and maybe 100 people showed up and yet NOFX will sell out in a matter of hours at the same venue. The bottom line is, most people don't get into instrumental solo artist guitar players very much.

However.. As far as being a waste of time? I can't agree with him on that. I can think of a billion other things that are much more of a waste of time that you could be doing. Playing music can be very therapeutic. It 's a good exercise in problem solving, setting goals and reaching them, it can help you cope with happiness and sadness, you can even get your frustrations out when you need to.

In turn, it can also be physically therapeutic. It can be a great stress reliever which will help ward off certain ailments that are directly related to stress. In other ways as well. Munky from KORN first started getting into guitar as a way of rehabbing his hand from an accident. It can even help reduce the risk of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

I know the feeling. My parents weren't too supportive of my music in the beginning. Until they saw my friends getting arrested for drugs and fighting. Then they were pretty much cool with it.

I think you'd be better to explain to your dad that you do what you do because you just like to. Not to be popular.

I don't think his dad has a problem with him being a musician, I think he just doesn't want to play the instrumentals SuperKid has written or doesn't want to play ANY instrumentals...am I correct, SuperKid?

...but Jah Soldier is right, unfortunately. For people to "get down" to an instrumental, it either has to be REALLY good or familiar-sounding--a movie theme, a song their parents or grandparents liked, a TV show theme song, etc.

My band used to do a sprinkling of instrumentals throughout the night (mostly originals) to give my voice a break (we were playing four or five sets a night)...most of the response was pretty good, but the "best" instrumental we played (in the opinion of us, the band) didn't seem to go over very well, until we recorded it and sold a lot of the CDs; after people became familiar with it, they enjoyed listening to it live. It made no sense to us the band, but we are musicians and 80% or kore of our audience wasn't.

I guess tubular bells by mike oldfield did pretty well? Though the album was more popular than the title track was as a single i guess.

For me personally id say Angie by Bert Jansch, but im fully aware it was hardly a hit, one of my all time favorite pieces of music though :D

What does he want....for you to be true to your inner self and follow your instincts...or to be noticed and popular?
I can tell you this,to be noticed in today's music world, you had better learn what the best thing you can do is,and build on that talent....popularity will come later...if at all.

Look up "AndSoIWatchYouFromAfar", they do all instrumentals and they're doing all right for it, they recently supported Them Crooked Vultures on their european tour.
