Thanks, I'll load Sharepod onto one of my computers that doesn't have Itunes on it. That's great, I wish I had an answer for your dilemna.

I know on my ipod I can access the file structure from my laptop, using usb and explorer.
Maybe manually arranging folders/files that way or creating playlists from within explorer will work.
Backup before doing anything.

My daughters macbook just packed it in, the apple store managed to save the 6000 pictures of my grandson, its all now on the apple cloud.

ping orignally was an operating system utility to test the connectivity between two computers. Still exists in windows, open a dos box ("command prompt"), type in "ping www.fender.com", hit enter.

I enjoy buying cd's, couldn't afford many back in the day, now I can. Something for free just doesn't seem to have any value, old school thinking I guess.

Just so no one gets the wrong idea, the 250 or so mp3's that are stuck on my Ipod were all ripped from my vinyl collection. I don't pirate anything. I could rip them again but I'm getting lazy and not as easily motivated these days.

Just another "all music original" lover here.

Let's go to the first question: How to order the albums chronologicaly?

I imagine that you know how to do it on iTunes, right? Then try this:

1. create a new list (eg iPhone Music) and order the albums as you want.
2. synchronice iPhone and iTunes.
3. check if it worked.
4. tell it to us, please. (I don't have an iPhone, but it works on my old iPod Mini...)

What do you mean by a new list? A new play list?
Do you mean I should put all of my music into one playlist?
I have well over 3,300 songs on my phone spanning a little over 460 albums.
That would take all day and three pots of coffee to acomplish.
I'm looking for a setting that I can adjust or tweak and then sync it into submission.
If the setting doesn't exist I'll just live with it.
It's only a pet peeve.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

ceri, how I did it was:

On the top menu bar:
View> Sort Albums>> By Artist/Ascending/By Year

the last 3 are all in the same box. of coarse this only works if all the albums are tagged properly, which seems hit or miss at best.

Ping is a messaging client on the iPhone, but iMessage is much better!

I can find the songs I want, my iTunes is very well organized, it's just a pet peeve of mine that the albums are not listed the same way on the phone as they are in iTunes.
I have Ping and I never use it. Regular old texting is about as savvy as I get with messaging. I do have a 4S-64 and I have heard of Siri but I've never tried it. New things from Apple like Siri and iCloud make me nervous. I currently have Siri and iCloud both turned off. How invasive is Siri and is it really any more functional?

So that wasn't much use, was it? I don't seem to be a very Apple-minded person. Sorry.

Cheers - C

In iTunes under library, click Music to display your music library. Then at the top left corner of the library pane click where it says, "Artist, ???" and select Artist by year. You can also select what size icons you want displayed in the library under that same menu.

It has (Siri) pretty good voice to text for notes, reminders, calendars and will find a song and play it if you ask it to. I use it to compose text messages and confirm they are sent.
Not invasive at all, IMO. I don't use iCloud though. I'll wait until iMatch is officially
released and then sync iEverything. :D

Sorry for the delay, there was a little problem in my account settings. (Thank you again mr. Traweek)

I'll try to do my best (I'm in upper intermediate level, sorry):

If you already have a playlist, do you know how to show it chronologicaly? In my iTunes (it's in spanish, but I hope it's the same that in english) I can see some columns in my Music View: Name (track), Year, Album, Artist... If you "click" on Album, it changes the order, if you click again it shows Album by Artist, and if you click again, Album by Year.

Does it work? Well, in the right side of the column, a little triangle can be changed, to ascending or descending. Choose your option and you will have your music in the order you want.

Now, try to synchronice this playlist (just that one), and see how it appears in your iPhone. I'm doing it in my old iPod Mini and it works. Never tried on my iPod Touch, as I use it for documents and work stuff, sorry. But I'm gonna try it this weekend, just to know...

I hope it can help you.
