Hey all. Been a little while.
So I have been meaning to start playing to an audience for a while and my school apparently hosts open mics all the time (didn't know) but the next one isn't until December 8th which works out alright.

I plan on playing through my strat copy on some basic amp if they don't have one set up. Figure its the first time so its a learning experience anyway. Then while I am at home on break, I hope to play a few more times.

Anyway the main point of all of this is, I have never done this before. Any advice?

Lucky kid. I've been trying to get the SGA to budge on open mics for months.

You wouldn't recommend that to an underage college student now would you?

The recommendation includes no qualification.

That way, if you step on your dick you'll neither feel it nor care.

As bad as these kids have been, that comment makes them look brilliant. Obviously you haven't tried that yourself or you wouldn't be kidding about it. Rorer 714s, Lemons, Mandrax all stopped being manufactured legally in the USA in the early 80s because taking them was a sure way of falling down a flight of stairs even if there were no stairs within a hundred miles. Washing them down with Jack was stupidity on steroids and if you were that stupid then you tried to drive a car too, result, death. Nice gift for your family and loved ones. The bootlegs, available to this day, are worse. Would you like to see one of our younger members end up that way? I wouldn't want that for anyone here, not even a nitwit like you arjay. Cracking wise can be a smile, that crack could haunt you for the rest of your life. Delete it and I'll delete this.

The comment was made in jest but apparently you're wrapped too tight to grasp internet humor.

Feel free to rectally impale yourself on a "marital aid".

I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time

Back on topic...

If it's your first time in front of an audience I'd recommend playing something you know REALLY well that's REALLY simple. The first time I played in front of a crowd my mind went blank literally at the first note. Don't try anything flashy or hard, don't try to impress, do it for the experience.

+1000
A simple song (well played) trumps a sloppy reading of an impressively complicated piece any day.

I'll leave off any comments about anyone's amateur proctology.

I have a couple of songs in mind. I figure I need to get it down to 3. I have no idea what the cap is but I'm assuming if its 3 and go no more than that. Anyway, just spend the rest of the week and a half working on those 3 songs intensively.

If my colon is at risk here then I may take up another hobby

If you ever heard of a guy named Duane Allman, who was a brilliant musician,he gave these words to a young player about to be thrown to the wolves,as close as I can quote,"If you're going to try to impress other musicians or anybody with your playing, play what you know the very best you can, with as much passion and soul as you can find, now isn't the time to try something new, stick with what you know."

and btw...being a musician can always put your colon at risk, because fans and other musicians will try to rip you a new one,if you screw up....that quote is from me,not Duane.

Of yes of course. Thats a good point. As a runner in high school we said "The conference championship is a terrible time to start new pacing" so in a way that applies here.

Good thing I have a colon of steel! Like superman only...not all the way.

Thanks for the help so far everyone.
