James,

I am overjoyed to witness your statement of apology. You are demonstrating a primary and most important quality in the development of wisdom that is: humility.

I had left off with you on the "Praying to Hendrix" thread because I did not feel like turning the forum into a battle over philosophy and religion. Besides, there were others there trying to quiet you down already. My last statement to you was that your life would be grueling enough to teach you what you would not heed. I could say that to you in certainty because it is a truth for everyone, life is not easy. When you have reached your 4th, 5th and 6th decade you will know what I mean. You will experience suffering, pain, loss, failure, disappointment, perhaps death mixed in with the joys and pleasures of life. You will have made mistakes, foolish mistakes, you will do stupid things that old people warned you about, and you will wish you had listened. Even the best and most wise make mistakes, thats just going to happen, you can minimize them by learning to be humble and to "listen" It's Ok to question, because all advice is not good advice. You can question without scoffing. Seek out wise and well lived persons and they will help you. Be silent and observe. Your humility is refreshing it will spare you much sorrow if you cultivate it.

I am sorry to hear of your difficulty and disappointment with your playing ability. I am unaware of the details. However, if this helps at all, I have been playing on and off for 40 years now. recently I sustained and injury to my left hand, my fretting hand. I so missed playing that I flipped one of my souped-up Squier Bullets and have started practicing "Left handed." Eventually the nerves in my injured hand will heal and I can go resume RH form, but I can tell you it's been so much fun learning again that I will probably buy a LH STrat and always play some LH.

OL

Boxbang made a very important statement,"you're amongst musicians here",and of all of the internet forums I've been to since I first started this internet thing in the '90s,this one has the best group of seriously knowledgable, and talented, and experienced musicians that I've seen anywhere....the fact is it seems like it would be if we were all together in a room, and the type of treatment you would get in person....musicians can be a tough bunch of people to deal with because no matter how much someone "talks the talk",at some point they gotta "walk the walk",and if they can't cut it,well, then they get embarrassed to the point they go somewhere else.
It's better you learn to deal with us here and take that knowledge with you into the world, where you can walk the walk....you won't get an online education much better than that...no matter how well you might play someday, you still have to play with other musicians.

Thank you for the acceptance. I know I can do simple powerchords and maybe a couple basic level chords, but it really starts to hurt after a while. I can't move my ring finger or pinky at the speed I need to to play effectively. Both of them also lock up if I bend too far. I need some sort of system where I can use only 2 fingers, or I'll have to go left handed. (Which really doesn't feel right to me (also, the 'right' wasn't a pun) I'm left handed in everything else I do, which is kind of weird) I made one recording with a band a few months ago. I was on rhythm, but it was really good for 3 kids. I'd share it, but the BB code for links is disabled and it's on Facebook, so I'm not sure how to get it from there. We used really crappy mics though. They messed with the amps and made them squeel quite a bit.

All the more reason to learn open tunings, as Rebelsoul has suggested. That will allow you to make major chords by simply barring one finger across all six strings, at the desired fret. And it's easy to figure out the neck progression. If you're tuned in Open G and you barre the second fret, you have an A major chord; then, B at the fourth fret, and so on, right up the neck. You can simply slide your whole hand up and down the neck, to make your chords. I heartily suggest that you try this, as it may open up and entire new spectrum for you, musically.

BTW, your apology is accepted. No problem. "Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you."

I guess the tuning I've always done has been open. I never really knew the correct terms to describe it. I play it barred though. I get all of the tones I desire and that's all that matters to me. I've also been practicing clean more and more. The most enjoyable type is the Medium Gain (Rhythm) channel. Basically, the fat, wound, strings have a gainy sound and the thinnies have a clean sound. It sounds great all over the neck. It works for me. Yesterday, when I got home from school, I played from about 3:30PM to 10:00PM. Most of it was clean and I was feeling better about playing it. I feel that when my Marshall MS-2 comes in the mail, it'l be coming to school with me, and I'll be outside, or wherever practicing. Thank you for all of the acceptance and overall confidence boost.

That really spoke to me. However, it was in a language I'm unfamiliar with :|

I didn't know what to make of it either. I'll just call him my biggest fan.

It reminds ms of the prospector in "Blazing Saddles" who spoke "genuine frontier gibberish..."
