Today another one of my heroes and mentors would've been '69 years old.Although George and John inspired me into becoming a musician it was when I first heard Jimi that my course was really set. There was something soulful in all of Jimi's music that just reached out and grabbed me.Just about everything he played just touched my soul especially when he took his time to slow down and play from the heart like he did on Machine Gun and Bleeding Heart-these songs just ripped me apart and I still can't listen to either one of them without getting choked up.

I think that if Jimi were alive today he would be creating electronic symphonies and collaberating with other top musicians up to his caliber.I doubt very much that he would've gotten into the rap/hip-hop vein as his tastes in music were much too sophisticated for that. When Jimi was living in England he was thrilled when he found that the house he was living in was once owned by Georg Freidric Handel as he loved Handel's Water Music and Music for a Royal Fireworks.Such was Jimi's sophisticated tastes in
music.

No doubt that the hinges of the Pearly Gates are rattling today as Jimi is jamming with Moonie, the Ox and Noel,Mitch and Buddy.Happy Birthday Jimi-Sing On Brother.

Great blues, and bigger rock 'n' roll guitar player. My big inspiration, JH.

Such a shame he's been gone 41 years.

The great Mr. Hendrix is gone. But the man has left us with one of the most significant and controversial collections of music/stile /sound and energy, that any of us could have hoped for. RIP & Happy Birthday to you sir. You will live on in our hearts forever. 8)

Not to sound like a jerk...I just don't get his music...or the Stones....2 groups I just try but can't seem to connect. I do think he was a great guitarist but if you ask me to try and explain what he was talking about I am lost like last years easter egg. Maybe one day I will get it but for now I will just say that the music world is a bit less bright without him.

Even his closest friends couldn't explain him,I think it was Billy Cox who said he was like someone from another planet, who just came here for awhile and then left.
It was his time in history, his destiny or fate or whatever you want to call it...having lived as a teenager in the mid to late '60s,I believe the old saying "You just had to be there to understand",pretty much explains the whole ball of wax...and here in America, and in S.E.Asia,the chain of events laid the groundwork for the mood of the period, and the people who were a part of it.
Anyway,...in some ways,it seems like a dream from another world, and the players who laid the soundtrack for the decade are fading away, another generation soon to be lost to time...RIP Jimi.

Hi ABS a lot of Jimi's imagery was a bit out there like in Love or Confusion,The Stars That Play With Laughing Sams Dice and Purple Haze. The latter 2 were obvious drug references while the former is just a strange love song.He had a lot to say about society and even race relations like in House Burning Down which was an obvios reference to the race riots of the late 60s.Long Hot Summer Night was also race oriented as was the movie that inspired the song.

Jimi was a dyed in the wool pacifist as his statement"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, only then will the world know peace." attests to. His version of The Star Spangled Banner was meant to be a protest against the war in Vietnam and Machine Gun was a dirge against all wars. One of his most soulful songs Bleeding Heart-especially the version played at The Royal Albert Hall-is a statement about people failing to get along and communicate with each other. There is a part of the lead break where he plays a few slow notes that really could bring tears to your eyes,it was certainly his most soulful playing ever and I can't listen to it dry eyed-just beautiful. At first blush a lot of his lyrics are frivolous while others are very deep but if you dig down far enough you'll see what he had to say.Granted Jimi was a strange cat but when you decypher a lot of his songs you'll find that his main message was for peace and understanding in a world gone mad.

Rebel Soul:I think that you are maybe confusing that with a statement that Eric Clapton made:" Jimi Hendrix was a gift who stayed with us for a while and then went back with the other gods. "A great accolade from someone who has been called God more than once himself.

Re The Stones:IMHO they only released 2 good albums after Brian died, that's Sticky Fingers and Goats Head Soup, everything else was variations on the same theme as a few of their post Brian era songs.

You don't have to like someone because everyone else does. There are tons of bands that everyone else rave about but I don't like, their music just doesn't do anything for me.

BUT... if you want to try again, check out the CD South Saturn Delta, couple of highlights include, Midnight Lightning, Midnight, Pali Gap, Bleeding Heart... or check out the DVD Experience Hendrix, some great bands covering hendrix tunes. The best on that one is the band Indegineous playing Hear My Train A Comin'.

I wish I could have been a part of the generation that got to have their mind blown by Hendrix. He's my all time fave. We miss you Jimi. I understand not understanding the big deal with certain historical music acts as well. What you have to do is put yourself in that era and compare these people to what was going on then. Music was melodic and gentle and pretty tame. Then Hendrix plugs in and drops Voodoo Chile on you and you're seeing something entirely new. It can also be difficult to buy the hype. If you asked 100 people who the greatest guitarist of all time is Jimi would be the answer of people who have never even heard him because it's become implied in our society. Enjoy music and love whatever you want because it is art no matter who plays it and your thoughts, either for or against Jimi are healthy discussion.
