Mac, looks like you're thinking is working already. As some of your mates have written there isn't a replacement method for becoming a better guitar player, practice on your own and rehearsal with your band is the one sure way. With that thought in mind some have also written that the acquisition of new gear can be inspirational. So practice your chops and when some great piece of gear comes along that you just can't resist, well, all things in moderation :D

If you are playing a terrible guitar that won't stay in tune or cannot be set up, a new/better guitar will actually make you a better player.

If you are using an amp that limits your sound to one extreme output (for example, a buzzbomb 80's shred machine of some sort), a new amp will actually make you sound better, which will inspire you to be a better player.

If you have a reasonable number of well-made "basic" effects (overdrive, wah, modulation, distortion, delay, etc.), another pedal won't necessarily make you a better guitarist.

That being said, if you have a well-made, well-set-up instrument that gives you a reasonable selection of sounds, a reasonable number of effects and a well-made toneful amplifier...truthfully, new gear will seldom make you a better player.

Only when something comes along that alters you brainwaves or addresses a sound in your head does a new piece of gear make you a better player.
