BTW I did say $1000.00 but you could possibly find a good classical for much less probably half, but do take someone with you who is a classical student at the very least..... It is critical to get a good guitar at first......
You can also look into the colleges, there are often professors that teach outside of the colleges fro a reasonable fee and even students who also teach.....

yeah. the money isn't the deal. i'm in the state of mind that if you really want somethin', save for the good one, and you gotta work for the stuff you want.
I'll probably have me one one of these days :)
as fer lessons, I don't know that I'd take any. I know that may sound bad. but I 'm just slightly hard headed and want to be self taught..
ahh well

Trust Us....When it comes to Classical you really need a teacher. It's very easy to develop bad habits and incorrect technique, which later takes a lot of time and effort to redress.
Been that route, headbanging ( ) is not a plus in Classical.....

Magnatone is right. A good teacher is important.

I have played some of the rock school(a graded rock guitar learning school, like trinity for classical if you've heard of them)songs at grade 4 and 5. I don't want to put people down and say it's easier, but I think compared to the same grade at classical, I didn't find them much of a challenge. By playing classical, you'll get great technique and skill at all guitar. Andy Summers was a classical player before playing in the Police. And he has lots of great technique and musical knowledge because of that.

Nice guitars. I only have one(not enough space for more unfortunately), and am really feeling the lack of a cutaway at grade 6 classical. Half the scales are almost at the soundhole... The action is really high, and the fretboard seems to be made out of plastic. Still, it works. Hoping to get a better one soon.

Do your electros have a fuzzy noise coming from the electrics when you play(not through an amp, just acoustic)? My teachers electro classical does. I'm wondering whether to bother with the electro part when I buy a new classical(and also steel strung acoustic at some point, hopefully)-it could start doing buzzing after you've bought it.

Grade 6? cool! Well done. You don't reach that level just dicking around.. Just slightly ahead of you. Love to hear you play.

Do you mean fuzzy noises when the electros aren't plugged in? That's odd. Perhaps his guitar has an internal wire vibrating against the sound board. My Ibanez is completely fine acoustically (just a little quiet as you would expect). The Line 6 is a completely different design: It's full of micro processors modelling classical and flamenco guitar sounds with reverb, compression and microphone distance simulation. It's only about an inch and a half deep, so acoustically, it's about as loud as an unplugged Gibson 335. When I did my study. there was no such thing as a cut away electro classical guitar! My first amplifield classical had a retro fitted pick up built into a bridge saddle. You just took out the old saddle and slid this one in. You then plugged a mini lead into it and you were already to go. It was pretty expensive - made was by the "Shadow" company, and it was pretty crap - could never get the string ouput levels even..

Thanks, adey. It definitely takes a lot of hard work to get to grade 6 and beyond. Definitely worth it though. When we have to do performance assessments at school, the teachers seem to love it. Got 40/40 last time!

I'm thinking of going for a purely acoustic classical, on the basis that I don't need the electro part for home, and at school I can use a microphone for performances. If I spend the same amount on an acoustic classical versus an electro classical, I'm thinking that will mean I get better quality woods etc.

Would be cool if the fender forums had a classical section? :D :D :D Although it wouldn't make much sense, since they don't make classicals...

tele...You might want to run that by Brad, even though Fender does not offer classical guitars a separate section for players who do play classical would be great.
You could/would have sub-sections on technique, equipment, etc...etc...

I'd run it by him....I'm for it....Any One Else....... :?:

Sure yes, count me in. Actually, unless I'm mistaken, Fender had the Manuel Rodriguez line under their wing for a time, so maybe the idea isn't so far fetched at all.

Some good posts on this thread magnatone.. 8)

I'm on the look out for an upgrade on my Rodriguez. It's a fine guitar (£500 in the UK), but I'd describe it as a good student guitar. It plays beautifully and sounds more than competent, but it doesn't have that real depth of tone, that last 15 to 20% you get from a four figure instrument. Given the number of guitars I own, it's crazy that I don't have a basic concert grade classical with solid (rather than laminated) wood back and sides. The top is solid cedar of course. Might be a great instrument for "teledeluxe". However, whilst in Belgium earlier this year, I found a great music shop in Brugges. In there, I tried out a Manuel Rodriguez C1M, from the Company's Ecological range. It's £50 cheaper than a model A, but it blew my Rodriguez away - both in terms of sound and appearance. It's described as a Laminated Madagascan Ebony, and has a solid wood top. The back is an outrageously striped mix of light and dark and looks stunning. That's what I'd buy for a good quality classical that didnt cost the earth. My home City has a very fine Classical guitar centre, and I've been playing some of their "Aranjuez" (Raimundo) guitars. Beautiful instruments, but very plain. All the money is in the wood.

I passed on the chance to buy my teacher's instrument when he retired - a magnificent Marcelino Lopez concert guitar.. Kick myself every day. I'm playing a lot of classical right now - for 25 years I prioritised Keyboards and then elctric guitar. I played a few hours a week just to keep my technique in some sort of shape. Back to doing 2 hours a day on it now and am loving it as much now at 51 as I did when I was a youngster going through my grades..

You are correct about the Rodriguez Line at Fender, My old 2002 catalog had a section devoted just to that model line.
I sold my Artesano last year and that has proven to have been a mistake....

The choice is going to be to build both a steel string acoustic, probably in the GC style and a classical over the next year. More than likely I will go thru LMI for their partial kits, not having to build a steam bending jig will help ( in time I will but not right away as I still prefer to concentrate on building Strats.)
Slowly building a shop in my basement but the Cabin on the south side of our property is actually going to become the Rehearsal/Guitar Building/Studio. Work has begin but it will take about 6 months to get it done. Demoing down to the bare framework and then remodeling the loft area is key in its practical layout...

I like the idea of the different subsections. One for videos too maybe.

Brad and the other forum operators would want to gauge interest in a classical section. Perhaps if we made a thread for those interested to say "aye?" But it costs in terms of time and equipment and people to run this forum, I'm not sure if they would do it for guitars they do not (currently :D ) make.

If you're reading this, Brad, can you give us your thoughts?

Let's use this thread for a wider discussion - perhaps any other classical or nylon players out there could join the discussion and demonstrate an interest in a new classical guitars section..

Thats a good idea. I wonder how many classical players there are on the forum?

My guess would be quite a few, since it is inevitable that a classical start is more often than not the starting point...

I was expecting to see more photos of guitars. You guys are holding out.
I don't play classical, but I have an interest in it. Last week my Blues guitar teacher was out and I had a Flamingo guitar substitute teacher. I enjoyed the entire hour. What level would that put me at?

Here's my classical being shy-
Image

It's an old MIJ with lovely grain on the sides & back--probably laminated, but I've never checked that out.

I started taking lessons on classical for a couple of years, and took another two years lessons on it as an adult.

I do play classical a bit, but not real often, so I'm sure my technique has suffered somewhat.
But I do still play this guitar--often I play blues on it--it has a nice bassy response to it, and I've even used it for slide...

Here's a little festive something for beginners to try. A nice introduction for those considering this type of guitar.
