Will Fender re-finish my Fender Bass in one of their other colors.

Ex:

I want my '62 American Vintage black Pbass to be three tone sunburst, or blue flower? Will they do this if I send it to them?

I would think if you paid enough.

I would imagine it's possible for a price. Having it done by a different painter might save some $ and give you the same appearance. Check out local auto body shops, or local airbrush artists or something. Usually high school teachers can put you in touch with talented students in areas like that, happened for my son.

They did factory refinishes in the '50s and '60s but not anymore. They're way too big to do that sort of stuff now. If the finish has a defect that's covered under warranty they might do that, but they won't just paint your guitar a different color (and most often with warranty repairs they'd replace it rather than refinish it). It's the same way when you buy a new guitar from them -- if you want a color that's not offered on the model you want, you can't special order it.

The Custom Shop won't even do refinishes. They'll build you a new guitar with the color you want but they won't refinish an existing guitar. (Even with new guitars the CS has some restrictions -- you often have to go Masterbuilt to get a different color.)

It's like the way you can't send your Camaro back to Chevy to get it repainted. It's mass production -- Fender's two factories churn out hundreds of thousands of guitars a year (over a million in good years).

There are lots of places that can repaint guitars so the factories leave that sort of work to them.

Fender contracts with service centers to do most warranty repairs. A platinum-level Authorized Service Center may be set up to do finishing work but it wouldn't really be a "Fender finish" since the srevice centers are independent contractors.

From most of what's rattled around these pages I tend to think not. I've told a sad tale before in these pages about having CBS-Fender refinish a '58 Stratocaster about 40 years ago. I doubt that the present day company would repeat that disaster, nevertheless, you might want to find a local who you can keep under a watchful eye.

Find your way to the Stratocaster thread. There's a finishing question there and a link. They did the paint for probably one of the most unique project guitars ever done on this Forum.

I do have a factory flaw, but I think the warranty may be up on it. Plus the axe is 5 years old now.

I wouldn't waste the money for 2 reasons.

(1) Since your guitar is painted black, the odds are that once stripped down to bare wood you'll see that the body pieces have vastly different grain patterns, not what one wants to see in a clear mahogany stain or a sunburst.

(2) It still will be cheaper to buy a replacement body in either finish you desire...With properly matched pieces...
