Ok, how about a guitarist who is alive that was influenced by Hendrix, say, John Frusciante?

Fruciante is a great guitarist but I would not consider him a Great all Around musician. There is no way to determine who the greatest living musician is but I must say Prince is an amazing guitarist and a great producer. He does a bit of everything.

When I was 18 and Purple Rain was still being played on every radio station I would have said Prince is Corperate Sell Out with very little musical ability, that couldn't write anthing but a Bubble Gum Pop Hit or a Flowery Ballad aimed at Teenage Girls.

I was wrong.

Talented yes, enduring yes, diverse yes, but greatest living musician is still a subjective question. In my opinion there are others who fit that description better than Prince, but I can see how he could be on thie list of many others on the forum.

Why is it that the greatest living musician has to be a guitar player or rocker of some sort? Don't you think there's classically trained musicians out there more skilled then any rocker? When Prince or any other popular rocker can compose and arrange an entire work for an 80 piece orchestra, then we can talk about that person possibly being on the list.

sorry, missed "alive" then synester gates from avenged sevenfold

Synyster Gates is not a great musician he can just hit notes and pick very fast - that doesn't give him talent, just means he's practiced a lot.

Best musician? Hmmm. Paul McCartney, or.. anyone listened to Pat Metheny? That's amazing stuff.

i'll agree with the two above posts.... i'm pretty sure the "most talented" musician on the earth isn't in rock and roll.... possibly, but there are so many others who concentrate on theory and such their entire lives

synyster gates is a bit overrated as well i think... he puts together some good riffs, but i don't think he would even be considered as one of today's greatest musicians
