Am I crazy for thinking that? He's touched on so many genres in his career: rock, gospel, punk, pop, funk, r&b and made respectable music no matter what he dabbled in. His skill as a musician and producer are second to none in my opinion. Hell of a guitarist, even though a lot of the famous licks in his song were Dez Dickerson, his talent really shines in live performances. Awesome tone IMO too. His 2002 live album "One Nite Alone...Live!" makes evident his ability on piano. He killed on bass in the Rave Un2 the Year 2000 DVD too.

If Purple Rain was his only hit, that'd be respectable enough, but consider the rest: Erotic City, Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, 1999, Cream, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Raspberry Beret, Kiss, Diamonds and Pearls.

It's a shame that a lot of people only remember the midget wearing chaps with the guitar singing dirty songs.

What say you, Fender Lounge?

Even though his music is not my thing, he still is talented nonetheless. I just don't understand the whole name/symbol stuff he did. To each their own.

I think it was great that he made a movie about an artists struggle and was able to use his music - that was cool. Then again he was signed by that point etc. I'm not saying the guy isn't talented but between the name change thing and him talking about sex so much in his lyrics - it kinda turned me off. I really couldn't tell you anything about him after Purple Rain.

Prince is quite possibly the greatest living musician. He continues to dish out great music, and he's been doing it forever! 8)

If there was such a thing as the greatest living musician, Price would for sure be a contender in the Pop/Rock category. An amazing player, producer and producer of awesome, crushing hooks.... a killer live and in the studio, and a master of the undeniable groove.

Yo-yo Ma was disappointed to have lost out to Prince, but was consoled by fellow losers John Williams and Herbie Hancock in the Green Room.

Prince is a badass. Say what you want about his music or his personal life or whatever else, the man can shred.

Ok, how about a guitarist who is alive that was influenced by Hendrix, say, John Frusciante?

I don't know who the greatest living musician is, but I'd be willing to bet the farm that he doesn't play rock, or guitar for that matter.

I might be wrong, but wasn't he playing both rock and guitar for the Super Bowl Halftime show. I thought he played a Foo's cover

there is no way to determine the best living musician i don't think... there re certain characteristics that put some above others, but there are so many great musicians, many likely unnoticed, who are all across this globe from every way of life..... my favorite, although most likely not the most talented, is Matthew Bellamy of muse.... great vocalist, pianist, and guitarist... not one of the areas in inferior to the others, he seems to take pride in doing them all well, but not perfect.... all opinion though
