I was just looking out my window, watching the wind blowing in the trees. I spotted a new addition to my view. A new neighbor is flying a Confederate Flag /Stars and Bars / Navy Jack / Rebel Flag, bellow Old Glory. It's something seldom seen in the pacific north west. Normally in these parts when you see Old Glory it's alone or Sometimes with a Company logo or a State Flag below. Maybe thats the deal. I know that many southern state flags to this day appear to be offshoots from the old confederate flag. I remember as a young boy in Texas in the 50's they were flying everywhere. It's no big deal to me, just thought I'd mention it, and ask if they still fly them in the south?

I used to see them on travels, like in Georgia. Can't remember the town. I know I'd see them in PA too.

Yah they are actually quite common down here in the south.... There's a house down the street from my neighborhood that has one.
you see them on the backs of cars a lot too

I have seen the Stars and Bars mostly on bumper stickers on the backs of cars, not too many flags flying in my little part of Texas. It’s kind of a taboo thing to do around here. I personally do not see the harm in the flag in a historical sense, but some will see it as a calling card for white superiority or bigotry.

I saw many of them years ago when I lived in Flordia, but alot were friends of mine in the service, and there were whole sections of town that flew them.

Saw this huge one in Tampa in 2011. It is huge and flies off one of the big interstates down there. I couldn't believe it. I just don't see why these things are even around anymore. BTW, in before the lock :D . Gibson Forum shut down a thread like this last year. You see them rarley flying in MD. More often on bumper stickers or on jackets.

I see them occasionally up here in CT, which doesn't make much sense. Mostly on Pick-ups.

It's a controversial subject, I think I heard on NPR where a certain group wanted to have the flag outlawed and remove any trace of it in current history books...Sheer Stupidity...
Akin to wanting the Swastika and it's flag erased. Neither changes the history, to forget or pretend it never happened does not redress some of humanity's worst practices.
The flag itself means very different things to different segments of the population.
To some it is a painful reminder of intolerance cruelty and subversion of a particular ethnicity.
To others it is a symbol of a part of the country which was once proud.

Regardless of where any of us stand on this volatile issue I would suggest that flying that flag is quite inconsiderate, more so in various parts of the country than others.
It is a sobering reminder of a nation completely unhinged, however my feeling is that it should stand as reminder. It is a part of US History, certainly not it's best moments but history it is and hopefully it's survival can enlighten future generations to never repeat such madness.

I firmly believe that once you selectively sensor certain parts and/or moments of our human history, productive or destructive as they may be, One instantly sets us up for repeating the past.....

And now I think I'll return to figuring out why my neck pickup is not functioning... :?:

You see them in the South often, and like every other symbol it means different things to different people.

For some it is an "in your face" statement to the "Politically Correct" social-political-educational complex. The meaning being "just leave me alone." A expression of the desire to live free of growing government intrusion into our daily lives.

To others it's a statement of "regional pride". We are proud to be from the South, we are Americans and we are Southerners. We fell blessed.

To some the flag has only negative connotations. They can see no other, and that is why they recoil at the sight. They seak to ban it in all forms (These are usually the same folks who are all up on freedom of speach, but hate the American flag and the Pledge of Allegiance)

The world is a complicated place!

As a lifelong Texan (barring the last few months north of the Red River), I understand both sides of the debate.
I understand that to some it is symbol of tradition, a symbol of independence and pride, and a symbol of rebellion. My drummer (20 years my senior) was in a few southern rock groups in the 1970's, and most of them used the Stars and Bars in their imagery. Since he is/was a Jewish kid from Mississippi, and i know he has no racist tendencies, the flag meant something else to him. He says he would not fly one today, because he understands the way certain people (understandably) feel about it.
I also understand that to some it is a symbol of hate and racial strife, and it has been adopted by some nasty sub-human groups.
Since most people don't give the other person the chance to explain (or prove) their true intentions and motivations, flying such a flag is somewhat strange.
That being said, MOST (not all) of the people who display such symbols are not doing it to honor their rebel forefathers or the traditions of the old South. Most are racists or at least have racist tendencies.
I know there are some here who aren't racist and hold that symbol dear; I'm not criticizing those people. I just think it's hard to read the person's intent in relation to that flag.

On the way to Florida when I was a kid, there were these flags everywhere. It just represented the South. No negativity about it. The trouble started when the stupid kkk started using them later while preaching white supremacy. The kkk started in Indiana. They could have used another flag and ruined its meaning and nostalgia. I have seen some kkk and they are just punks. Greasy headed, pimple faced, dumb dullards. Should be ignored. There ought to be an amendment for whiffle ball bat parties with them.

Of course, if anyone is offended by my statement, I am very, very sorry and take it all back. :P
