The forecast called for 15 cm.(6") of snow but by the time it was all over over 30 had been dumped on us.To really add to the mess, where we live so close to the ocean the snow is very wet and consequently very heavy and a brute to shovel. On the up side this was the first time I got to try my truck in 4WD and she passed in flying colours. The road from our house to the main road hadn't been plowed and she went through it like a hot knife through butter and that's a one mile drive.Of course I wasn't surprised that the truck was great in snow, from previous experience with G.M. 4X4s they have a better 4WD system than most others plus mine has the locking differentials which I didn't need to engage.

My guess is that communities in high risk areas are better prepared to deal with the consequences of snow than others with tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes. I'm writing from Bellevue WA this morning, here in the Cascadia Subduction Zone which is just due west, knowing how all this majesty could go to hell in a handbasket at any moment. I read the disaster preparedness plans for this area after the Japanese event. Not much to look forward to out here I'm afraid.

Hope all is well with the lady.

I love 4x4 vehicles. My uncle in PA has a Jeep with a 2 foot lift and gihugic tires. We've taken it mud and rock crawling too. It's amazing.

My Chevy has the heavy duty tow package so it's equipped with automatic locking rear.

Hi Doc,was the Acadia All Wheel Drive and did it have proper snow tires?I'm asking that because no matter how sophisticated a 4WD system they are all pretty well useless with all season tires in snow. All season tires is really a misnomer as they are absolutely useless to the point of being dangerous in snow.People around her wouldn't think of using all seasons in the winter and as a matter of fact most people use studded snow tires on all 4 wheels as we get a lot of black ice in the winter and that's the most treacherous thing to encounter on the road.

No snow issues presently. I'm just not impressed with the vehicle in general. Studded tires are no longer permitted on NYS or NJ roads. Don't know about other parts of the country. Were I running in winter in the snow belt I would certainly be carrying snows on all four wheels. I've done that in the past. Unfortunately, black ice is not an issue for highway departments when their main concern is maintaining the integrity of the road surface for as long as possible. Studs were just chewing up the highways in some parts of the country. We're advised to carry chains.

This reminds me of the winter when my mom had a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350. It was beautiful, it was fast, but in snow, it sucked $@!.

I already have one winter rollover to my credit. About 30 years ago, in a '68 Volvo.

Had been having a problem with a prematurity in the kickdown switch which acclerates the vehicle and had failed to attend to it in a timely fashion. I was proceeding slowly on a snow covered interstate NJ hwy during a light snowfall and encountering a slight upgrade to which I sought to apply a small acceleration to maintain my forward motion. The transmission kicked down into passing gear, the car began to skid, rotating and move laterally towards the shoulder at the same time. There was a considerable amount of snow piled in the median in that we had been having frequent snows for several weeks by that time. The vehicle hit the snow bank and its momentum caused it to roll onto its side, my side down. Having had rehearsed this scenario in my mind many times, I shut off the engine, unfastened my belt, braced my legs against my door, stood up and raised the passenger door like a hatch cover and was helped out by motorists who had witnessed the event and had stopped to help. The left rear tire was off its wheel and we had to mount the spare in the snow after righting the vehicle. The car had done practically a 180 around its vertical center because, once righted, it was then facing in the direction I had been traveling. It happened so fast that I had no opportunity to correct it. The saying s--t happens can't be overemphazized. I was being cautious and got burnt. Anyone who operates a vehicle at excessive speed when faced with inhospitable road conditions has no consideration for their own lives, the lives of their family members whether in the car or not, or anyone else's for that matter. Pity how thoughtless many motorists are. Beware the sins of complacency, over-confidence and false pride. Remember the Titanic.

I live in Switzerland. You know, the mountains (Alps) ... we see a lot of snow during winter. Our favorite cars are Subaru, Jeep, Skoda, VW and the likes, all 4WD. Sometimes it's more than one meter of snow during the night, especially deep in the mountains. My car is a Skoda Octavia 4WD, very nice car.

Cheers

David

I think of scenarios like that all the time. But my mom was fighting a blizzard with racing slicks. It was terrible. It took us about 2 hours to get home when the drive would normally take 25 minutes.
