I have good $100 in my Paypal from many sales on eBay and the leftovers from working, so I figured I'd get a Wah pedal. I was sort of wondering what the best bare bones Wah, like just the effect with no knobs or fancy things. I would think it would be a Dunlop Original Crybaby. But what's it like from personal experience. Thanks.

Thanks. If you press harder on it, does it control the depth of the cry? That's my main question.

I'm a fan of the Original Cry Baby (GCB95). There however are many options, like Vox or Morley. I suggest trying some out or watching demos online to get an idea of the differences between all the different options.

I'd definitely go for a Cry Baby. It's just a damn good reasonably priced everyday working wah that does everything a wah should.

Work with it for a while, and when you've got a feel for it, then you can possibly replace it with something which fits more with the exact character of the sound you want. The Cry Baby is pretty much the universal wah standard, so then you can go shopping with easy criteria like 'I want something with a little more bite than a Cry Baby, and a smoother sweep', makes finding your ideal wah much easier.

I've been through pretty much every wah in existence, but a basic original Cry Baby seems to be the one which is most often to be found on my pedal board. Lost count of the amount of Cry Babies I have sold over the years, only to buy another one when I got bored of the wah I replaced them with.

I’m with Vulpinity on this one. I recently got one new from GAK (unsure if this is a UK only online store though) for £55. For that sort of price they cant be beat. i think they’ve got a great range and bite. There’s so many others with different variations, but if you just `want a wah`. id stick to the crybaby till you know more about what sort of wah you want.

One of the things that many people seem to look for in wah`s is the type that you don’t have to `click` on and off, i know some of the more swanky ones just turn themselves on when you put your foot on it. Wonders of technology eh! The crybaby original is the click on and off type, but I’ve never had a problem with this.

Buxom, your query "If you press harder on it, does it control the depth of the cry?" I’m unsure what you mean exactly, but i don’t think so, its literally press down hard to turn on, do the same to turn off, when its on its an even sweep of wah. Not really any other functions.

All the best, Olly.

+1 and just remember a Wah isn't life or death. The effect gets old really fast. I think its one of the most overused effect out there. I use the Original too. I'll use it as a tone control from time to time. Also, if you have an old Wah laying around that doesn't work, Build Your Own Clone has a drop-in kit that's pretty cool. A friend of mine built one and I got to borrow it for a few days. It's tweakable too.

Well, I mean is the wah like a gas pedal. The more you put your foot down, the more power you push out.

By power, I meant the wah-ness, I guess. The gas pedal was a comparison, but thanks. I'll definitely get one if I can.
