Can anyone explain to me the advantage of using a built in effects loop instead of inline from guitar to amp?

Supposedly modulation and delay effects sound better for being after the amps pre-amp.

Though if you listen to all the classics, they weren't effected using effects loops.

when running a really high gain distortion with delays and such it sounds cleaner with the delay in the effects loop rather than in front of the preamp. when you are hitting the front of the amp with lots of gain with a delay it makes it extra muddy. like if you were running the MXR FullBore Metal into a delay it would be ALLOT cleaner running the delay in an effects loop rather than in the front of the amp. doubling that much distortion in an over driven preamp is just messy. but with a clean tone I don't really notice a difference.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Sounds like the effects.loop is primarily for those pedals that don't affect tone. I guess it would still be better to place the tube screamer in line, which makes me think of another question pertaining to the order of pedals. Right now I start with my wah, then Muff Pi then phaser. Where should I put my recently ordered screamer in that line up for best tone?

Either before or after the Muff, according to taste!

Most Muff users love the sound when you run it into a TS style overdrive, but some useful sounds can come when you put the overdrive before the Muff too. Try both, and see which you like!

When running one OD/Dist effect into another and running both at the same time (or multiples) the last one downstream in the signal chain (ie: closer to the amp and farther from the guitar) will have the greatest affect on the final sound.

like said previously running a muff into an overdrive sounds really nice and sometimes driving a muff really hard with an overdrive sounds nice to. you cant really hurt anything trying

Right. So now you know that whichever pedal you think sounds the best when you are soloing, that's the one you want to be last in your OD/Dist chain because when you set it to boost your volume and/or your gain and you then hit it for a solo that's the one you'll hear the most prominently. However, there is another school of thought as well. If you like that pedal for both light grind AND soloing then you still put it last but you use another pedal in front of it set for big volume and then you use that one to PUSH your fav pedal harder. Do some experimenting. There are lots of combinations and they all sound just a little different.
