I've been a Prince fan for about 5 years now, and I never heard anyone mention him in the same sentence as Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana etc... The guy is a beast. Listen to "Peach", "Temptation"(he totally channels Hendrix on this song) etc...

Show the man some respect.

I agree whole-heartedly. He's a spectacular musician, multi-instrumentalist, composer, bandleader and showman.

I think his image--especially in the early days--left people at somewhat of a strange position. Many of the macho guys were turned off by the makeup, lace and high heels, some people were turned off by the dirty lyrics and some people just don't know good music.

His ability to simultaneously channel James Brown and Jimi Hendrix makes me freak out...I love his music.

Yeah I said the same thing in a debate last night. I said if Michael Jackson did the things Prince did, Michael would be considered a badass, but because Prince wears high heels etc... he's not badass.

I think the man got full creative control on his first album after record company heard his demo. That's pretty awesome.

In the 1980s, there was actually a People magazine cover asking who was the true king of pop--Michael Jackson or Prince. LOL. Because of Purple Rain, Prince at that time was seen as an FM radio MJ-style pop singer. He perhaps cultivated that image at that time. In fact, for whatever reason I think a lot of people only know Prince as an FM radio style pop singer. When he's really a musician of the 70s who rocks.

As it turns out, we all know that Prince is an amazing Hendrix-level guitar player and plays other instruments and is not in the same category as MJ. MJ was a singer and dancer (and a great one). Prince is also a great singer.

Wanna talk about guitar? What about "When Doves Cry"??? Greatness, in my opinion.

Heck yeah! Some say the intro is being played backwards. My favorite solo is the "America" 21 Minute Version solo, it's so psychedelic.

I truly appreciate the talent of Prince Rogers Nelson. While certainly a talented and versatile player on a multitude of instruments, an appealing singer, a prolific songwriter and a polished engaging performer, Prince is still perceived by critics as lacking dimension and versatility since he concentrates almost exclusively on the dance/R&B genre. There is also the matter of his eccentricity.

The other names you mentioned have played in many genres and styles for their own projects and others projects, not to mention that they had a 20 year head start. Whenever Prince plays it is for his own projects, not with or for others projects. While he has had proteges, and others have covered his material, he hasn't actually played guitar for anyone else so far as I know.

I would not say he has not been given his due since he has racked up 10 Platinum albums, 30 Top 40 singles, one Oscar, one Golden Globe, 7 Grammys, ranks 27th on the Rolling Stone list of the 100 Greatest Artists Of All Time and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame on his first year of ballot eligibility in 2004. That is hardly being ignored by the music community.

He played everything on The Time's first 3 albums.

He's a very talented musician, I just never heard one of his songs that I liked.

Believe me, I'd be happy to play the geetar have that good!

Oh, and there was this "ex" in my past that was a HUGE Prince fan, maybe my disdain for her carried over to him, sort of "guilt by association" ya know?

You have to check out his 1999(1982) album. "Little Red Corvette", "Lady Cab Driver", "DMSR", "All The Critics Love U In New York" etc... But "Around The World In A Day is my favorite album. It's a very Psychedelic/Beatle-ish record.

Far be it from me to badmouth Prince he truly is one of the unsung greats of guitardom and hasn't received nearly the credit he is due.Even the guitar mags have virtually ignored Prince,he is one of the most exciting guitarists of our time, just listen to his blazing outro on Let's Go Crazy-the guy is incredible and certainly has the Jimi Hendrix/Ernie Isley/Robin Trower vibe going.

He also used to be rather tough to interview, requesting that the (print) interview not be recorded (who knows shorthand anymore?) or limiting the number of questions or amount of time severely...that might have cut down on his positive press, too.

I love Fred Armisen's imitation of him on SNL...ridiculous!
