You might checkout Amplion they have a free version. Also, Freeamp 3 among others. I have not used Audacity much, but I think you can get a plugin for it to allow you to load these programs as vst's in it.

I would be happy to help you get up and going. Amplitube is very nice. Some of the best advice I can give you is to try before you buy (demos). Unexpected software/hardware conflicts are not uncommon with this stuff. The main difference between what you pay for and what you can put together for free is knowledge, the expensive programs are already setup for easy work-flow and have nice presets. If you don't mind experimenting you can get almost any sound you want and high quality for free.

Amplitube Fender is nice. Also, doesn't Amplitube have a basic free version that you can then upgrade as you want through their store.
Yes, they do.

Just a thought, Reaper would make a much better host (DAW) than Audacity. It has a non-expiring 30 day demo. After 30 days they ask that you buy it, but it will continue to be fully functional until you do.

I love the amplitude software stuff. For my DAW I use Presonus Studio One 2 pro. Fantastic software which is really easy to use.

Presonus is awesome If you can afford it. It is defiantly one of the best. I think it was coded by Cubase programmers that went out on their own, so you know they are good.

If you downloaded a cab that would be in the speaker selection part. I think freeamp is a plugin only vst (needs a host (DAW) to run). Amplion has a standalone program if I recall.

ok, I spent some more time with it all tonight.I found my downloaded cab a metal cab mind you and it is very accoustic.I will not bother tediously working with amplitube 3 buying the software may be cheaper in the long run.Reaper is much harder to use than audacity but both cause me the same issue.I have a usb guitar cord and i can hear myself play guitar using amplitube. However, I cannot hear and record, in fact reaper cannot find my signal every time I record it is pure silence.I have amplion working pretty well for me but I just need to find a recording software.

In reaper under options/preferences/device select ASIO. Make a track and turn track monitoring on and arm it to record (both track monitoring and arm are on the track controls). You should be able to hear your guitar and see the input meters working. Reaper is really easy once you spend a little time with it.

Have you tried Riffworks? You might like it for recording and the free version is good.

I primary use Reaper (I also have Ableton Live LE and SONAR X-1) for PC recording, with a Cakewalk UA-4FX external USB audio capture device http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=758.

If you're having this much trouble with PC recording, you want to consider a BOSS BR-800 http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=1068&ParentId=110 or a used BOSS BR-600.

The BR-800 is easy to use, and comes bundled SONAR X-1 LE. You'll spend more time recording, than learning how to record. And with SONAR LE, you'll be able to get your 'toes wet' using a real DAW, not just a audio editor.

I really prefer to record with my BR-800, much faster setup, and sometimes I'll export the tracks from the BR-800 to Reaper for tweaking or adding VST soft-synths.

I'm going to hijack this thread for a moment. Thouston, I have been trying to recreate the reverb from a 65 deluxe. Do you know of a vst to do this? I have quality reverbs, but I'm talking about that super sweet reverb that some of the older ones have. Of the spring reverb emulators I have tried they sound muddy by comparison and not really on target. There was a video on youtube a while back, and this guy was sitting on the floor with no shoes on and he was demonstrating the reverb on an old fender. It was truly the sweetest I have ever herd. Better sounding that other videos. I have been wanting that sound ever since.

I have been looking for that vid but I can't find it. I assume it was a spring reverb, it was just a guitar and fender amp. It sounded clean and clear and did not have a steel sound to it that so many have, it was just sweet. Even when he turned the reverb all the way up it sounded clear. My luck, it was probably one of a kind.

Yes, and it was from TC Electronic as a free download, but it's not on their site anymore.

But, try this site:
http://www.gersic.com/plugins/index.php?searchFor=reverb&action=1

I downloaded and installed AmpliTube 3 Free http://www.ikmultimedia.com/amplitubefree/features/ and there's the Fender Reverb module in the amp section.
