I can't imagine firing at enemy fighters coming at you firing back...the starboard waist machine gun.

The Wife and I took a 30 minute flight in the B-24 with the Flights of Freedom it was expensive but worth it $400. per then. It was as much fun as the Petty experience.

Few aircraft are as beautiful as an early mark Spit, and the Sabre in flight.

What usually comes next at these type warbird airshows is some fool with more money than brains attempts low level aerobatics and flys the ship into the ground.

With the exception of the Mig-17, and the chopper, those are U.S. warbirds. :?

That "F-86" is actually a re-design of the original Sabrejet and produced in Australia by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAC_Sabre

Visually similar to the North American Aircraft Company fighter of the Korean War, it bears little mechanical semblance to it and few parts are interchangeable.

That's true Arjay.

The CAC Sabre had a lot of mods, engine replaced with RollsRoyce, armament replaced, Intakes and body enlarged, amongst other things.

PKBassman, yes technically they are US conceived planes, except the Spitfire and Meteor.
But they do qualify as Aussie Warbirds.

When these planes served in the RAAF they carried Aussie insignia, in Aussie squadrons, flown in combat by Aussie pilots, and purchased by the Australian Government and they've lived here ever since.....we think that qualifies to be adopted as an Aussie and the guys who flew them think so too :)

A couple of them were "born" here, as Arjay correctly pointed out the CAC Sabre was built here in Australia as was the P51 CAC Mustang and F/A-18, the Spitfire was British built, the Meteor was also British built and yes the other couple were built in the US.

One of my favorite "Australian" military aircraft was this beauty......

Image

Euphemistically known as "the pig" by the crews who flew them, this photo depicts their final deployment for a "Red Flag" training exercise to Nellis AFB, NV two years ago, shortly before all of Australia's Aardvarks were retired. The F-111C was designed specifically for the Australian Air Force and were all depot-level maintained at McClellan AFB, CA -- where I was stationed for a time. Twenty-four were built and I probably saw every one of them at one time or another as they periodically rotated through the maintenance facility for overhauls and upgrades (yes, folks -- even military aircraft get "modded").
