I play better when I am drunk, or at least I think I do :D

I used to think that, too...until I heard the recording of an *Ahem* impaired jam session made during a beer- and tequila-fueled evening.

I play better when relaxed, too; since I quit drinking about 13 years ago, I had to figure a new way to get my head right before a gig. I don't advocate transcendental meditatation (the spiritistic aspects of that practice make me uncomfortable), but the breathing exercises are great for a balanced, soulful performance. The actual process of deep breathing and removing negative thoughts from your mind will lead to better playing.

I sit back for awhile before a gig and close my eyes in a quiet room at home and also do the meditative process of calming down, sometimes I can't,but resting and getting my mind right to play my best usually has good results.
Going into playing with a lot of negative thoughts is hard to overcome....unless your music style needs negativity.
