I tap my feet, loud enough to make noise, if that counts as a beat.

I typically use My key board Metronome or Drum Tracks. I also enjoy several favorite Back Tracks I found on You Tube. For Me its more like playing in a Live Band situation. Some times I lay down a rhythm Track of my own and build on it. I don't have a regimented study plan like I should. If I get to serious about things, I loose interest. 8)

I think we as musicians grossly underestimate the importance of a metronome/beat while practicing... Especially for sight reading skills...

Spoken like a true, long-time musician. My beat is also inside my head and it's very, very accurate and unwavering. That may be why I gave up on live drummers years ago.

I sometimes play along with actual songs, but I mostly just sort of vamp.
I don't try to get better as a musician, I try to make better music.

If you play with other musicians in a band, the timing is never going to be as perfect as a metronome...that's part of the skill of being a musician, the drummer isn't a machine, some can keep time better than others and some are worthless....the human element is a big part of the "live" as in live music....you have to be able to play well enough to cover for timing mistakes, and keep it on track and not wind up in a train wreck.

I bought a digtech multiffect pedal(RP155) for drum beats as well as effects and also has a looper. Also I bought a cheap keyboard and it has drums and other music beats that are adjustible and there is alot of them.

Most all the time, if I'm playing along, I'll play along with a concert DVD or with a CD (usually when I'm watching a game) using my Tascam CD-1

I'm playing with metronome (sometimes without it - just me and guitar) or just playing along with jamtracks.
