I use glass or something similar, like some slides I bought called Rocky Mountain Slides, they're made of some type of clay and glazed like ceramic pottery, they have a great tone....I still have about 5 original Coricidin bottles from the early 70's,but keep all but one put away...those things are going for crazy prices on eBay!
For acoustic slide I use brass.

All, steel and plastic too.

I like brass for old blues, steel for country and plastic for rock'n'roll where I push the gain a bit.

I dislike glass. No one seems to make one that feels comfortable around my finger without it being 5mm thick. Which makes for a very heavy slide, something I find hard to control.

Worry about what is comfortable more than minuscule differences in sound that a half decent amp's eq will mask.
You're not recording in Nashville for some primo country star, you're trying to have fun. Comfort is everything in that instance.

I love the tone of glass slides, but for some reason I just can't use them! Never found one which I can control properly or fits comfortably.

I normally use a basic old steel slide, might not be the ideal tone in my head, but for some reason they just feel comfortable and get the job done. I'd rather actually hit the notes I'm aiming for than be all over the place but with perfect tone.

If you want more more of a traditional sound go for brass. Glass has more of a warmer modern sound to me. Stay away from the slides cut from a bottle neck, as cool as they are, they're not very practical.

When I was working with disabled kids, making custom seating and positioning systems for them,I used to cut up the frames of condemned wheelchairs. The chrome plating on most wheelchair frames was much much thicker than on a toaster or cookware for instance and maybe even thicker than was on car bumpers.I'd cut the pieces of frame into 2 1/2 " lengths and deburr the ends and presto-I had a first rate slide that would last a millenium and worked like a charm.Sadly I have only one left and that's for my own use,the rest I gave away to friends who were always complaining about the quality of store-bought slides. In retrospect I should have sold them at a premium as they were certainly the best chrome slides I used.

I like the sound of glass but I agree with Nikki that most of them are uncomfortable.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Over the years I have used many things for a slide, Mic stands, zippo lighters, beer bottles, etc. Coricidin bottles used to be the rage here in the U.S., sometimes you can still find an old one on eBay. Currently I use a V-Slide made by Vinni at V-Picks.

I prefer to use glass. My Teles(which I play slide on) tend to get just way too bright when I use brass slides so I went over to glass and really loved the tone. It is all up to how you feel and what is most comfortable for you. Enjoy your quest!

 no one else likes good ole 3/4 copper tubing !?!? that has an awesome old school blues tone and you can get enough to make 4 or 5 at home depot for 7 bucks! it will turn your finger green after a while but if you clean it regularly its not a big deal.
that's all me and the old man use

I use glass and steel/chromed slides.

I prefer the sound and slickness of glass, but as many have said, it can be uncomfortable. I remedied that by lining my glass slides with sticky-backed felt...no more sweaty slippage. Good for a warmer, rounder sound.

I make my own slides out of deep wall sockets, too...pretty dang cool and sustain for days. Good for a harder, brighter sound.

I don't like brass--it tends to be too "draggy" or "grippy" on the strings, and just doesn't work for me.

Try different types of slides; just because Guitarist X uses a brass or glass or ceramic or whatever slide, doesn't mean it will work the same for you. Use what feels/sounds best to you...

Riley,
I have all kinds. Most aren't store bought. You can use all kinds of things. I have a tile saw so I just cut my own bottle necks. Some work better than others. I've used bones, lighters, pipe, all kinds of stuff.

One of my favorite store bought slides is called a "Mudslide" it's black porcelain and sounds like a cross between glass and metal. Another favorite of mine is a deep socket. Just look around a Sears or other tool store and try on a couple to see what fits.

I'll have to try that deep socket supro! I don't play much slide but when I do I'll use anything that's handy.

Glass slides have a mellow sound, but they are more fragile and can break. Metal slides are sturdy and produce a sharper sound. I've tried both and some others including a bic lighter and sound equally horrible on all.
