Well went to play at a local jam session last night and the battery for my active pick ups was dead. Lesson learned and thank god I had a back up guitar.

Rehearsal, gig, jam with the boys, whatever, I never go anywhere to play without taking along my little overnight sized suitcase of goodies which includes a small rudimentary tool kit for minor issues, extra cables of several types, XLR, 1/4", TRS, RCA, MIDI, etc., extra strap, batteries, cable tester, battery tester, AC circuit finder to detect if an outlet is live or not, AA MagLight, extension cord, strings, pegwinder, cutters, etc. My little suitcase has gotten me out of plenty of situations.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

The rule of thumb I learned to live by when gigging was pick out what you think will be enough for back up and double it.

I keep a kit similar to that in my hard case.

Just got myself a rhythm guitarist spot. It's great. The leads go in my case so I just have to lift an amp and a case. Won't take a pedal board, don't need any spares aside from strings.

Easy work.

Another good thing to keep in your fix it kit is a small aerosol can of contact cleaner. Some times especially with older guitars and amps the Pots will be sticky and give a fuzzy sound or pop. A little contact cleaner will smooth them out and they will work like new.
