I have always played right handed. I couple weeks a ago in attempting to keep my dog from biting my Vet during a exam, I got the snap myself on my left hand which is my fretting hand. One of the nerves and synovial spaces on my ring finger was injured and if I try and play guitar well it hurts and aggrivates the injury.

Well this is driving me crazy not being able to play guitar! I am to the point of buying a Left hand MIM standard and starting over again just to be able to play until my fretting hand is healed. I do not see holding a pick in my injured had as a problem.

I have often toyed with the idea of learning to play "the other way" in the event of such an injury. I think it would be quite fun retracing those early steps.....and it's an excuse to buy a Lake Placid Blue Strat that I do not have.

Go for it! Ernie Isley taught himself to play left handed along with originally playing right handed. He said that Jimi Hendrix came to him in a dream so vivid that it seemed real-commonly refered to as lucid dreams-and Jimi told him to learn to play left handed.

The beauty of a lefty Strat is that when your hand heals it won't be too much of a chore to change it over righty, basically you just flip the nut the other way(very carefully) and reset the intonation and action. When you flip the Strat over the whammy bar and controls are on top thus allowing you to do some of the things that you could never do with a right hand guitar. With the whammy on top you can rest your forearm on it while playing lead, allowing you to do whammy effects while picking and doing the air raid siren like effect Jimi got in Machine Gun.He bent the G string at the 12th fret and did hammer ons while dipping the vibrato arm with his forearm. That's a very difficult trick to master but when done right it sounds great and impresses the life out of anyone listening. You can also change pickups with your forearm while picking without missing a beat or note.

If I do it I intend to keep it a lefty and practice with it a little each day along with my right hand guitars. I think it would be fun.

I had thought about flipping one of my RH Squiers, and pehaps I will. I hate to spend the money but would love a Lake Placid Blue/Maple Strat.
