Woo-hoo... It's back on You Tube!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqISzRFz ... ure=colike

The previous guy who originally put it up on You Tube, somehow ended up getting it removed for some reason. I am sooooo happy that someone else was able to re-post it back up!!

Clapton just rips into this tune. Check out the reactions from Donald "Duck" Dunn and Steve Cropper towards the end!!! 8)

FYI:

That guitar was Lot #86 at the Crossroads Auction in 2004. It's a 1988 Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster Eric Clapton Signature Model: neck end inscribed R&D #1CS/2/23/88 and ,stamped in red ink in the neck pocket, Custom Shop/Fender/USA. Mike Stevens built this guitar. It served as the main stage guitar between the summer of 1990 and March 1993. Among such performances, in addition to the Dylan tribute, were:
-theUS/South America/Japan leg of the Journeyman Tour
-the 24 Nights RAH series
-the Japan tour with George Harrison
-the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony with Cream

It is the first official artist sanctioned black Custom EC Signature Strat. Somewhere in our myriad discussion about this guitar [among others] was posted a link to a website wherein was published Mike Steven's remarks about the evolution of this build. It is described by Lee Dickson as the last of the smoker guitars and, to him, as 'one of the killer guitars.'

PS: If Chromeface finds this thread, expect lots of photos.

Doc

God I miss the old Eric Clapton, before he started playing jazzy soft rock. :|

Hopefully he'll start steering back in that 1993 direction.

Seems to me that his set at the last Crossroads Concert was anything but jazzy soft rock. Can't take issue with any artist's quest for versatility and the exploration of new horizons. You can certainly cherry pick the orchard and listen to what you like.

Not sure as to why we are all so passionate about a certain moment in a player's career as being the best and other moment labeled as lackluster.

Sometimes the musical stew is not what we expect, but for my own preference, I much prefer hearing a new direction than a redundant rehash of the same modes.....
Of course it doesn't always succeed, however the final judgment is in the ears of the beholder..

That in a nutshell pretty much guides my musical leanings towards various forms, rather than a regimented note for note Blues progression.

Thanks for the post of the video. Always amazing when he recaptures his genius.

Duck Dunn sounds great too.

Great video. It always amazes me that each different stage of Claptons long career, I am able to find songs, performances, and directions I love about it. I guess that is why his music touches so many. Still far and away the yardstick for guitarists.

I can see why you say that, and I used to defer to him, until I began to realize something special about Mark Knopfler, a creative genius in his own right, with whom Clapton has worked, and who, unfortunately, doesn't seem to enjoy the level of celebrity that Eric does. I own practically everything Mark has produced and I've come to recognize him as a songsmith and instrumental artist of great depth, and creativity. In many respects, IMHO, he outshines Eric.

Lots of guitarists can outshine EC when they are really on top of their game. One guitarist who comes to mind is, Albert Lee. He toured with EC back in the mid-late 70's and into the early 80's. I've heard stories of EC's concerts back then, where he'd turn to Albert Lee to take over on a solo, and Albert Lee would play so amazing, he would literally blow EC off the stage!

Just saw him last night on an old Emilou Harris video. Strange to see him with long, dark, curly locks.

No doubt about that. There's always someone better. As you mentioned, when someone is on top of their game, they're hard to beat. Albert Lee was doing it long before Clapton, he was always an inspiration, just like Clapton is an inspiration.

This performance was inspiring, at least for Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and the rest of the band.

Really, he was one of my greatest inspirations, right after B.B. King, long, long ago.

.......not to mention that Dunn toured with Eric for quite some time, too. He was in that Live Aid appearance with him.

Mr. Dunn did a lot of work on E.C.'s albums too, I'm just too comfortable to get up and look at the credits on the cd's.

Before this turns into a confrontation, there are moments in time when we happen onto something really good that we really can enjoy.

If you ever wondered who E.C. looked up to as a contemporary, check out his discography somewhere. Mark Knofler, Stevie Ray and countless others come to mind. Lest we forget, Dwane Allman.

All of the artists we listen to can be said to be, the greatest, at any given time. Whoever you happen to like and admire, you won't get any argument from me.

Now if you want to get into a debate on who is right, I like my pizza with just cheese, how's that for controversial?

And to show you my flexibility, I always order some for the wife too.

Here's proof!

I play a Clapton strat and admire Eric's playing, his early stuff where he seemed to play with a bit more commitment and fire, not nowadays. He's retreated into his millionaire lifestyle and IMO seems to be going through the motions nowadays.

A lot to do with the fact he never seems to stay with a settled band and he never seems to write any decent songs nowadays.

I also found the whole acoustic MTV thing he did as particularly unpalatable. When you've listened to the bluesbreakers, Cream, Derek and the Domino's, Blind Faith, you don't want to see Eric donning his slippers and pipe for a cosy evening by the fire! Plus the acoustic watered down version of Layla was horrible compared to the original. I want to hear him in a band like Cream where there were two other incredible musicians driving him on. I don't want to hear him playing mild mannered Ray Charles covers and some of the stuff he's produced lately. To me his playing just seems like playing the blues by numbers and going through things by rote.

I don't know, Eric's just became old, especially when compared to Jeff Beck who is as vital now as when he first started, more so in fact.

Not to get too down on Eric, but when you're just going through the motions, it's possibly better to retire and live off your millions and let folks remember you when you were in your prime.

But be honest who would you rather watch in concert, Eric or Jeff Beck? Jeff all the way IMO.
