I had 'em. It wasn't the worst thing in my life (then or now).

Glad my teeth are now straight...

I had them for 3 years starting in grade 6. You may hate them now but you'll be happy you did it when it's finally over.

I had them. No more biting into apples or other hard foods. No gum. Sucks when they tighten them!

Had 'em for 5+ years starting just after 5th grade, teeth were a real mess. Had to go in every 4 weeks for a tightening.

I'm old enough that I was supposed to wear one of those "headgear" things to help with the overbite, however, since the bigger kids had found enough other reasons to kick my $@! around at that time I refused to wear the headgear to give them one more reason. That was the reason for the once a month tightening, sucked.

When it's finally over, you'll be happy you had 'em. Two of my kids and wife have had them and can't believe how much less involved the process is now. Wimps!

I wasn't as lucky as you. I never had them, now I have crooked teeth. A nice smile is very important to your first impression. Sometimes it can be a deal breaker, so don't complain. 8)

When I was 20 I lost both of my front teeth in a freak accident.Wearing braces is only a temporary thing but losing your teeth is permanent and dentures-even partial ones are a pain in the sit-upon as food keeps getting caught up in under them no matter how snug they are.Denture adhesives can make you urge when you put them on the dentures.Be thankful that it's a relatively short term when compared to a life sentence with dentures and you'll have a mouthful of perfect teeth that the chicks will go wild over.

Yup... I had braces in middle school (I had to switch from trumpet to trombone), and only had them for 2 years. It sucked, but you learn to deal with it.

Later on in life, during my years in the US Coast Guard, I was playing hockey after hours, off base, etc... with a bunch of the guys. I was on right wing, skating up the ice with the puck, ready to pass it forward to the center, and I collided head-on with the other guy on defense. The two of us went down on the ice, and I unfortunately hit the blade of his stick with my mouth on the way down. Knocked out my front teeth and one incisor, broke the eye tooth and the other incisor on the other side. Thank God the military paid for the dental work! I got a complete upper bridge from eye tooth to eye tooth, but all these years later, it broke right in between my front teeth but it's still okay. I don't have the $$$$ to get it fixed now that I'm retired. So as it stands now, I have that "David Letterman gap-tooth grin" since the bridge spread apart a little bit.

Now you're swimming in MY pool.

- To those of you in active orthodontics, particularly with fixed appliances....daily meticulous oral hygiene with careful brushing and the use of ACT Anticavity Rinse twice daily according to directions on the label. Leave no food residues behind. The product you want is either cinammon or mint flavored and reads 'anti-cavity rinse' on the label. You can use the kid's version if flavor is an issue. The company makes two other rinses which ride the wake of the original. Those are not what you want. Also....zero sucrose/carbohydrate tolerance of foods particularly carbonated beverages and YES, even those sports drinks.

-Mouth protectors for all contact sports are a must. for anyone participating...orthodontics or not.

Doc.
