skirt- i took my first lesson at age 6 (1960). i had lesson books and good teachers. i learned the basics first, and as i progressed i learned basic songs.

after a little while i was turned over to a teacher who was a great jazz guitarist. in addition to great instruction, he taught me songs i wanted to play.

you are right about you tube. i still learn from videos on there.

i took almost 20 years off of playing for various reasons. when i discovered you tube, it helped me get my playing back up to speed. i now play better than ever

I love seeing that your working with your grand son. That is very cool. I have 3 grand kids 2 little girls and one boy. I have all 3 working at various stages of guitar playing. I'm not forcing them but allowing them to make the choice themselves. The 5 1/2 year old girl is the most enthusiastic of the 3 she has all the classic Rock Star Moves down pat. I am enjoying the heck out of watching them grow. 8) :)

I come from a musical family so it was natural I picked up a guitar in the '60s,two of my sons play guitar, and here's a picture of me and my youngest jamming in a club with his band,he started on drums when he was 10,guitar when he was 11,and was gigging when he was 15...now at 26,we still play and have lots of fun.

I did start at the age of 10 (a huge thanks to my three uncles for starting me down that road) and I still haven't mastered my instrument as well as I would liked. It has been 39 years of playing, some periods of playing professionally and some periods just for fun. But it is the one thing I will do to the day I die...well maybe one of two things!

Reb, I think it is so cool that you get to play guitar with your son...mine plays drums and even though we end up playing lots of oldies, he always enjoys it...and he is learning to appreciate that sometimes something simple sounding is not as easy as it seems...and we end up having some great life lesson conversations between our jams!

FWIW

thanks T2...you'll always be thankful for those jams with your son,for me over the years playing music with my son has been the best time I've ever had in my "career" as a guitarist.
