I just learn songs I want to play. Sometimes you pick up on songs because of group work or something. Never really wanted to learn smells like teen spirit. Just kind of had to.

Funny. When I started to play the only thing my wife asked was that I don't play "Stairway to Heaven" LOL and I haven't!

I purposely don't play some of those songs--go sick of them.
But I think I've played all of them--at least in part.

My list-
Train Kept a Rollin
Hey Hey, My My
Not Fragile
Smoke on the Water
Sunshine of your Love
and 5 that you (the person playing that is) wrote.

3 - Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
4 - Foxey Lady - Jimi Hendrix
5 - Last Child - Aerosmith
6 - Crazy Horses - The Osmonds
7 - Helter Skelter - The Beatles

Are we talking about bar gigs here? Cuz if we're talking bar gigs then you can forget the Zeppelin, Hendrix, Sabbath and Queen, etc. You need to play immediately recognizable songs with a strong simple beat that people can dance to. When they dance they stay in that bar instead of moving on to some other place because they're having fun and they buy drinks. If the gig is all about you being a wanker and the guitar wannabes are watching you intently instead of buying drinks and hitting on girls you won't come back for another gig. It won't matter if you're the most talented band in the area, if people don't dance and buy drinks you won't get another job at that bar. The bar is in business to sell drinks, period. So forget about all that fancy schmancy stuff that you think shows off your talent and play some simple 3 chord rock songs. Keep your solos short, simple and melodic instead of complicated, fast or psychedelic. You may not impress the wannabes but you'll prolly get to dip your noodle after the gig. And more importantly you'll get another gig.

Alright Now - Free
Can't Get Enough - Bad Co.
Hair of The Dog - Naz
Satisfaction - Stones
Mustang Sally - Pickett (Rice)
Etc.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Indeed, the reason why punk, and the whole 70s hard rock thing started, a drinking crowd didnt want to hear 7:00 minute solos, they wanted hard hitting blues howlin rock under 4 minutes
To Fit this standard id go with
1. Twist and Shout
2. Louie Louie
3. Highway to Hell
4. Paranoid
5. Bad Reputation
