It is amazing how attached we can become to our pets. Often the right thing is the most difficult to do. It's nice to see so many good natured people on this forum. Wether it's people or pets I get the impression that the members of this forum really wish good for each other.

First thanks to all for your kind words of support.

After my last post yesterday I went home and walked my three dogs that stay with me permanently. They are all strays that I have kept over the last few years. I tried to drown out the sorrow in playing with them. It helped a little, but grief is an internal struggle and no-one can go through the valley for you. I slept fairly well. Fell better today but still saddened.

Man, I know just how you feel, probably even worse. I just had to put down one of my cats yesterday. He and his brother were the first pets I got when I was out on my own for the first time. He developed a thyroid problem that in turn messed up his heart. Talked to a second vet after the first too quickly told me to put him down. Well he came to the same conclusion and we decided to go ahead and do it. Now I feel like the most rotten thing on the planet after watching the fight my little bud put up against those drugs.. Well now I'm sure I made the wrong decision and it's just too damn late to do anything about it. Tried playing some Blues to help get some of those emotions out, but, not even a Strat sounds good to me right now.

Hemi, I think we are on the same page. I am sorry I did not take a few hours to think it over and discuss my options for the pup. The Vet called me at work with his findings and he offered no positive options. I kind of got talked into a quick decision. I feel like I let the little pup down and did not fight his cause well.

My Vet is very overloaded since his partner retired from the practice and in hindsight I think he just did not want to deal with this pup. He is a good guy don't doubt that at all. I just should have thought about it more---but it was too late. I imagine Vets become immune to the significance of a death, the would have to, to be able to stay in business, for I imagine they put down animals every day.

Again, thanks to all for your kind words and support.

I live in a very rural area and folks are always dumping their stray dogs out. I have rescued, patched up and found homes for many dogs.

Sunday morning I found a young pup with a bad limp in his left hind leg. Took him to the Vet today and found out he had a broken jaw and hip that were partially healed but healed improperly. I think he had been abused. He advised that the pup be put to sleep. I reluctantly agreed, a now kind of regret not telling the Vet to "try" and fix it all. To late.

These situations breaks my heart. The endless supply of humans who mistreat their animal insures that the process will continue.

I had to have a puppy put to sleep almost 2 years ago. He is buried in my back yard. I still think about him all of the time and I regret the decision. I probably always will regret it. It was the right thing to do, he was in unbelievable pain, but it doesn't make it any easier to live with for me.

Releasing animals from pain and struggle that they are unable to rationalise, is the greatest and kindest gift you can give them. Never forget that.

But for the person responsible for the decision, it is one of the hardest things to do. So bravo to you. What makes it so hard, is the regret, and the concern that you are making the very best possible decision at the time.

I've had to let 2 much loved pet dogs go - one with liver cancer and another with lung cancer. I still remember every second of those last few minutes at the vet's office. On both occasions I bawled my eyes out, in a way that I never have done with the deaths of close relatives.

I too have rescue dogs - including a 16 week old Lurcher puppy, and a stray we took in after he approached us to ask for help last weekend. He is the most beautiful Border Collie, who had shredded the pads of one of his paws. I've been unable to trace an owner so far, but would love to return him to his people (assuming of course that they hadn't abandoned him). Taking him home was an easy decision - In the UK, November 5th is Guy Fawkes day - and to have left him cold, and in pain, terrified by the incredible noise of the fireworks was quite unthinkable, no matter how impractical it was for us to take on another (3rd) dog. His beautiful nature reveals itselfs itself a little more every day he is with us..

Thanks, Really fighting with being angry with myself today. The worst part is that yesterday morning was the second day I had the pup, he was happy to see me and was acting more chipper. I packed him up to go to the vet thinking he need to get a surgery to his obviously injured rear leg. Well turned out he had a broken jaw and broken leg and were "old breaks" the Vet advised putting him down without offering options. Again I wished I had thought it over and go to the wall for him. Feeling rotton.

+ 100% i think if your basically mean to animals your probably mean hearted in most other respects.
Nothing with make you feel better about the puppy, only time will lessen the heartache a little. I still remember digging a hole in the ground and burying my first pet dog in 1981 !!

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water, and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. There is only one thing missing-They are not with the special person who loved them on Earth. So each day, they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up...The nose twitches, the ears are up, the eyes are staring....and then this one suddenly runs from the group. You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. your face is kissed again and again and you look into the eyes of your trusting pet once more. Then you can cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

Never again to be separated.

Doc

I know man...It's a tough read when you've just euthanized a cat whose body was ridden with cancer. We do the right thing by them in life, and when it's time, we do the right thing then, as well. For that, and more, they love us.

Again, Thanks to all of you for your kind encouraging words a patience and continued support.

I was analyzing my feelings about this and came to realize that I was doubting the prognosis given by my Vet., and that is fueling my continued doubt about my decision.
I know the man to be very experienced , hard working and honest and an animal lover. I don't know why I am doubting his analysis. I guess something inside me thought things were salvagable and the little guy could be saved. The consience is a hard taskmaster.

I know myself and this is going to take time. It will probably always haunt me.

Thanks all.

oneal...take it from me...oft times we are more merciful to these dear creatures in comparison to kinds of lives we impose on human beings whilst hoping for a miracle.

thanks ZZ. I am trying to be balanced with myself today. Remembering all those other pups that die alone and unwanted or at the hands of evil forces.

God knows it will not be long befoe another Pup will come looking for my help. In the bond between the two species I have noticed that the wounded K-9 will seek out humans for assistance. Any way that is my experience.

Thanks again

Know how you feel. Given her druthers, my wife would have liked to have owned a large estate and operated an animal rescue service. Certain physical limitations make that difficult now, allergies in particular. She made it through the last five years of our last cats life taking Allegra every day. Our Yorkie, who will turn five this week, is a darling creature, whom she loves to death and vice versa, and whom she is, most fortunately not allergic to.

Thanks again to all who helped prop me up a couple of weeks ago when this happened.

Good news today, I successfully placed a stray American Bull Terrier puppy I found early in the summer abandoned and starved out on a lonley stretch of highway. He has a good home now and a lady that will appreciate his company and protection. :D

A very smart loving pup.
