I live in a very rural area and folks are always dumping their stray dogs out. I have rescued, patched up and found homes for many dogs.

Sunday morning I found a young pup with a bad limp in his left hind leg. Took him to the Vet today and found out he had a broken jaw and hip that were partially healed but healed improperly. I think he had been abused. He advised that the pup be put to sleep. I reluctantly agreed, a now kind of regret not telling the Vet to "try" and fix it all. To late.

These situations breaks my heart. The endless supply of humans who mistreat their animal insures that the process will continue.

+1000

Today's animal abuser is often likely tomorrow's serial killer.

It's really crappy when people abuse animals like that. Animals generally are only looking for affection and companionship and are incapable of understanding why the adults who control them are so abusive.

I also am incapable of understanding that. One of the best pets we had when I was growing up was a beagle that we got when it was approx 1 yr old. My grandpa was going to this farm to get a beagle puppy for us that they wanted to give away. When he arrived he found the farmer had killed all the puppies and the only one left was the mother so he took her.

When we got her home she was obviously malnourished, and very very scared of myself or my dad. If we raised our voices for anything she would cower and hide. But grab a leash and mention a walk and she was uncontrollably excited. She turned out to be a fabulous dog and lived for just shy of 20 years.

And as a cable TV installer for 7+ years I saw many examples of idiots being just as cruel to their kids as to their pets. Stupidity knows no boundaries and crosses many lines.

Thanks to all.

The part that stings the most right now is that I regret not thinking over the decision. Thinking I should have tried at least to have the puppy fixed up. My Vet seemed not to want to advise that route, and my Vet is generally very good and makes good decisions. Just second guessing myself, which logically at this juncture is pointless.

Don't beat yourself up second-guessing your vet and wondering if you should have gone to extraordinary measures to save it. There's a strong chance it would have been in permanent pain even after undergoing major surgery and a long difficult recovery, and the vet is the best judge of how successful surgery would have been. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for an animal is to end its suffering. Bless you for saving that pup from a cold cruel death out in the wilderness, never having known love in his life.

I try to believe that most of the people who dump dogs out in the country think that they're being "nice" to the dog. That they think it'll be free and happy and live the life God intended, that taking it to the pound where it'll sit in a cage awaiting euthanasia would be "cruel". Lots of people live in fantasy land when it comes to understanding what hard miserable lives stray dogs and cats live.

That's probably a fantasy on my part. They're more likely scum who are afraid they'll be charged with animal abuse if they take their abused pets to the pound. But I dslike the human race enough as is -- sometimes I need wishful thinking to keep from exploding.

All of my cats are alley cats turned loving pets. I have one that's still considered feral.

Animal abusers should be put away for life as there is no place for the likes of them in civilized society. They are the absolute dregs of society just like woman beaters and child abusers.Good for you for taking in needy animals but sadly when you do such a noble thing there will be times when you have to make heartbreaking decisions. The poor little puppy is no longer suffering and I'm sure that there's a special little meadow in Heaven for pets that were abused.Don't beat yourself up over it as the good you are doing far outweighs the tough decisions that you are faced with. Thanks for providing refuge for God's helpless creatures.

The general situation is a real challenge for me. I see many strays and cannot near save them all. Generally if a dog is an adult, and looks fairly well nourished I pass them by or stop and give them a meal and try to access their general health. Usually you cannot get close to them if they have gone somewhat wild.

If I see a puppy or injured animal I will pick them up and do what I can, as they are the least capable of taking care of themselves. Food, Vet, foster home and then hopefully good permanent home. Just found a home for a little gal dog last week which is very rewarding.

Unfortunately this is the case.

Thanks, I know that logically, but right now the emotional part stings awfully. Thanks again

As others have said,
Sometimes the hardest thing to do is the right thing to do.You are a true hero Oneal.
I am sure your vet advised the right advice, even if it does sting hard. The pup is no longer suffering.I have saved many animals in my life and will continue till I can no longer help.I have 5 cats all from the same litter that I rescued.I didn't intend to keep them all but watching them grow and interact with each other was really awesome .I just couldn't come to split them up after they were abandoned. They would have become ferral and just keep reproducing. We have tons of feral cats around my house. It really is sad sometimes cause I can't help all of them. Some think I'm crazy but they bring my family and I lots of love and happiness seeing them grow and become beautiful loved animals.

I think all good folks have the same feelings about anyone that abuses animals, old folks or kids. There usually the same kind of pepol. I wouldn't turn my back on any of them. :x

Man, I know just how you feel, probably even worse. I just had to put down one of my cats yesterday. He and his brother were the first pets I got when I was out on my own for the first time. He developed a thyroid problem that in turn messed up his heart. Talked to a second vet after the first too quickly told me to put him down. Well he came to the same conclusion and we decided to go ahead and do it. Now I feel like the most rotten thing on the planet after watching the fight my little bud put up against those drugs.. Well now I'm sure I made the wrong decision and it's just too damn late to do anything about it. Tried playing some Blues to help get some of those emotions out, but, not even a Strat sounds good to me right now.
