The TR includes reverb and trem plus it's a "total package" with its pair of on-board speakers......

They are very heavy and very loud though -- you won't hear any audible breakup or OD below the human ear's threshold of pain.

Have you played a Deluxe Reverb re-issue yet?

Arjay

If the '70 Bassman sounds anything like my '69 I'd have to say buy it and wait until you can afford speakers. My '69 is just a screamer of a blues/rock amp,I paid only $200 for it about 10 years ago and it was the best $200 I ever spent because at the time the amp was worth at least twice that.I don't know if the schematics are the same-I imagine someone like Arjay would know-but if they are it's a superb amp.

Hi Elix1r,

what sort of music do you play? And what is the budget? Do you want to take your future amp on stage? What size car do you have?  8)

If you want a flexible, well-built amp, give Blackstar a try. Played it at honourable Forum member AndyBigHair's the other day and was mightily impressed! He might show up and give his input if he's around.

Cheers!

I forgot to add: According to common knowledge there is no THE amp. There are only many sweet amps, and we wants them all, don't we, chaps?

Hi Elix1r,sadly I don't have any means of sending you a sound sample but the tone that comes from it has that real Texas blues/rock warmth just the right amount of smooth distortion that starts coming on at 6 and gets real raunchy at 10 where you can tame it down with your guitar volume control.I have used my Strat,SG,Les Paul and Guild S-100 through and it sounds phenomenal with each one of these guitars and people who hear it are blown away by the tone.I use an old 2-15 '68 Bassman cabinet with the original Fender speakers in it which I think may be Oxfords. She also sounds great through my Marshall JCM 800 1960 cabinet but there's something about that old Fender cabinet that finds every sweet spot in the amp.BTW I have no trouble getting the 2-15 cab in the back seat of my Nissan Sentra and I put the amp in the trunk.

Dumble Overdrive Special.
Good luck finding one.

OK, so it can't cost more than $10,000,000. Good. That means we have a budget we can work with.

"it gotta be a tube amp with reverb"

Bassman amps don't have reverb so that should make your decision easier.

*******************

Are you being offered a Bassman 70 and a Marshall cab for less than the price of a Twin Reverb? Depending on what model the cab is and what speakers are in it, that's somewhere between a pretty good deal and a really great deal. (Some Marshall cabs are worth more than used Twins.)

Or do you already have a Marshall cab? If so, you might want to consider a Dual Showman Reverb or a Bandmaster Reverb. The DSR is basically a Twin Reverb in a head without speakers. The Bandmaster Reverb head is lower powered (but higher powered than a Deluxe Reverb).

BTW, for clarity, are you talking about a 1970 "Bassman" amp, or a mid/late '70s "Bassman 70" amp? In the first post you said Bassman '70 and that gave Guitslinger the impression you're talking about a 1970 Bassman.

The 1970 Bassman was rated at 35 watts, the '72 Bassman 50 was 50 watts and the later Bassman 70 was 70 watts. The B70 had the UltraLinear circuit -- practically no power tube distortion. The B70 has a master volume but the preamp is low gain so you can get mild crunch at low volume but heavy distortion tends to be buzzy. OTOH you say you've got pedals. All of the Bassman heads take pedals well.

A Bassman 70 is a somewhat less valuable amp than a 1970 Bassman.

**************************

Also keep in mind that '70s tube amps really should have fresh power & bias capacitors installed. If that hasn't been done in the past 10~15 years it's overdue.

A lot of people wait until a cap fails before replacing them. Most of the time nothing bad happens. But sometimes when those caps fail they explode and spray corrosive goo on everything inside the amp. And sometimes when they fail they take the tubes and/or transformers with them. It's better to spend $100 recapping than spend several hundred on repairs.
