Going oldschool. Stratocaster: Olympic White (Ash Body), Mint Green guard, aged knobs and covers, Lindy Fralin or Klein 69 pickups, Bonded Maple "U" neck (w/Maple Cap and transitional logo), Kluson Deluxe tuners, Standard 6 screw bridge with a brass block and my 4 spring configuration, no cover on the back.

Hope that's descriptive enough.

My perfect guitar has been made,it's a 1965 sunburst Strat with vibrato,B-neck, shallow C neck contour. The first time I picked up this guitar it felt so good that it couldn't have been better if I wanted one custom to my specs. As far as I'm concerned the L series Strats (62-65)were the best playing and sounding Strats ever made.

Mine would be a Goldtop Les Paul standard, 57 spec but with a Strat pickup in the neck position.
It would sound like a LP in the bridge and exactly like a Strat in the Neck.

I know it's impossible but for me it would be PERFECT!

Still working on it..

So far this year, I've really been honing down on what I really want and need to be comfy in my current stage of my musical career. Trying out guitar after guitar, pickup after pickup, function after function.

I'm starting to zero in on what I want live at least.. In the studio, I'll never be happy with just one guitar.. I'll always show up with a nice variety.

Earlier this year it all started with my epiphany (of sorts) that I really like short-scale guitars live for Reggae. It all started with a pawn shop purchase of an Epiphone Special II to use as a beater for $40.. One of these:

Then I found a Schecter Tempest Custom for $120 with active EMG's in it.
Image
And all Hell broke loose.. I had to find my perfect short scale guitar (within my means anyway).

A couple of things.. The Tempest isn't the easiest to access the 17th-20th frets on the high E for me due to the heel of the neck joint getting in the way and my thumb getting caught up on it. And it had a slight balance issue. That's it.

My Squier Esprit is much easier to access, but bigger balance issue, and it's just a big bodied guitar, slightly heavy, and contour could be better for my forearm.
Image

Then I found one of these:
Image
Cort MGM-1
Better contour, lightweight, no balance issue, easy access to the higher frets, fits like a glove. Search over?? Not quite.. I like the placement of the 3-way switch on the Tempest better for easier access to the switching between pickups..

Is it possible to find all that I'm looking for?

I recently found one of these for $140 at a pawn shop:

Image
The Wasburn BT2Q..
Mahogony body, easy access to the higher frets, no balance issues, switch at the upper horn, contours that feel as smooth as a Strat, fits my body perfectly.

I'm in the process of pimping it out these days to get a final verdict. If all is good, I might shoot for a higher end Washburn BT series guitar in the future. We'll see. I've got my pickups narrowed down to Duncan PATBs, Dimarzio Tone Zones, or EMG actives.

The evolution of my short-scale quest is taking shape. I'm getting close.. Very close indeed. 8)

Will be specing it out over the next few weeks.

It's a Stratopartster build of course, but just to list initial items.

Neck...22 fret lightly flamed maple, Ebony Fingerboard, jade fret dots
soft V or C neck ( or I may build 2 at the same time... )
gold Sperzel locking tuners. Logo ( mine in Abalone ) inlaid over ( undecided over head top lam)

Body.....Walnut....Rosewood or Flamed Maple Pickguard and rear cover.
Pups will be either SCN's or N3's or... :?:
in either aged white or black will be covers
TBX Tone pots
Wilkinson vintage trem in gold
Dunlop locking strap pegs in gold

All finished in clear Polycrylic......

Not sure this will need the specs listed, but a Clapton model in two tone sunburst (with highly figured ash body) with the lace sensors. That will work for my simple tastes!

I've got it, my Band of Gypsies strat is about as perfect as I could hope for. Smooth and slim neck, one single coil, one humbucker, great finish.

I just built my (almost) perfect guitar...

Fender CP Jaguar body and neck, all AVRI hardware, (apart from the CP bridge p/up), vintage cloth wiring, paper/oil caps on the tone pots, treble bleed kit on the master vol. pot.

I'm happy with the CP bridge p/up for the styles I'm playing, but will try an AVRI just so I can satisfy my curiosity, as the AVRI neck p/up made a huge difference - well, I changed the wiring and cap's at the same time, all I can say is it sounds like a completely different (and much better) instrument.

Also on the way is a Mullard mustard cap. for the tone switch.

The only thing I'm not 100% happy with is the finish, a nice - if you like that kind of thing - vintage looking 3tsb, so a re-fin to something a bit more colorful is on the cards. (I'm liking Sherwood Green).
