Do you take it with you whenever you need to go anywhere for an extended period of time?

Personally, I play for a couple of hours everyday so maybe a couple days at the most.

I would take my guitar with me on every flight but I am forced to always check it in..which gets pretty expensive so I end up leaving it at home. :?

What about you guys?

I had to go a few months because I was in between instruments.

The longest I've gone without it in the six years I've been playing was for about a week or two this past summer when I had a massive sunburn. It was too painful to do much else but watch TV. Despite that though, I played a little bit in the studio because we had already booked the time and couldn't change it. I limped in with red limbs, and had to sit down to play and have someone set my gear up and carry it for me because it hurt to put any weight on my feet and legs. It took my about a month to recover, and I really just now feel like I'm back to where I was (as far as playing goes) before that.

Eight months...while deployed to Iraq. When I got back it took a couple of months to get back some technique and for the calluses to build back up!

Unfortunately I don't get to play as often as I would like. I pick up a guitar almost every day for a few minutes, but to actually plug in and play, that's a bit too rare lately.

But when you're working full time, going to college full time, helping a kid who's home schooling (Armadillo 'Tween), husband and daddy full time, active in congregation and trying to maintain sanity all at the same time...something's gotta give. I graduate in spring, so I have already negotiated with Lady Armadillo for some weekly "axe time", as well as a band members road trip to see some stuff I have never seen (Delta Blues Museum, Beall Street, etc.) at that time.

Back in '08 I had some surgery and didn't play at all for about 2 weeks. That's
the longest I've ever gone without playing.

My work puts me in different places all the time. I always take an acoustic guitar with me. I think the only time I don't have a guitar with me is when I take road trips on the motorcycle. So, I guess a couple of weeks, max.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I've been playing for over 40+ years, and several years ago I was burned out,I went for about two years where I hardly ever played, but then the passion came back and I picked it back up and never let a day go by without serious playing.
At the time in my life when I wasn't playing, things were going really bad,and I just tied a knot in the end of my rope and held on....that's what you have to do sometimes....life really is worth living.

In college, I went to study a semester in Rome, and I figured that bringing my guitar overseas was out of the question. Once I got to Italy, I went about two weeks without playing guitar and I went into a noticeable depression. One day, when I heard someone down the hall from me playing an acoustic, I walked over to them and asked where they got it.

I actually found a very nice Gibson dealer near my apartment (the shop was on Via Germanico, if anyone knows the area) and I picked up a very nice entry-level Epiphone acoustic (a black AJ-100) that held me over the remainder of the semester. It wasn't the caliber of guitar that I was used to, but I've got to be honest, I got way more than my money's worth from that guitar. That guitar has since become my bang-around travel guitar, and has a lot of sentimental value. It pulled me out of a serious rut.

longest time I went without playing was from birth to 12 years old  also a whole month shortly after I got married. my wife made the mistake of asking me if I would give up playing guitar for her :? my long pause answered that one for me. so I had to stop playing for a bit to prove my love  women

since then, she is fine with the fact that if i have a guitar is my hands I don't hear a word she says! so she waits, or flicks my ear to get my attention  I still cant get her to start playing guitar, BUT! I actually got her playing some blues harp through my champ last week! and she loved it. we played for almost an hour 8)

 no idea. its freaking impossible........ you are lucky to get a "HUH?" out of me
guitar is one lady that whenever you touch her she gets your complete attention no matter what's going on. and when you are married jealousy creeps up

but my crafty wife found a solution. when she wants my undivided attention while I'm playing she just walks in dressed in some sexy lingerie  I generally forget all about guitar  and afterwords she gets more attention than she wanted to begin with
