Hey moderators,

I've played guitar since 1977, and currently play unpaid for about 2000 people every week. How come I'm listed a a hobbyist in my profile instead of an amateur? How can I fix it in my profile?

Thanks!

You can't. The little titles you get in your profile are based on the number of posts you post.

Click where it says "your fender profile" up at the top of the page and then on the next page where it says "please classify yourself as a player" click amateur.

Actually, in this case we're talking purely about "forum rank" which is based off of number of posts -- we thought it'd be cute to have folks' forum ranks correspond to a musical career progression. In retrospect it might not have been the best idea as it's caused some confusion.

Thanks Brad!

That clears it up a bit. Thanks for your help. I enjoy your posts, too.

I must be blind, crippled & crazy. I couldn't find any "please classify yourself as a player" after I clicked on "profile". Oh well. It's not that important to me anyway.

I'm just glad that Fender has this site - and that they choose to participate too, at times. It's always nice to read the views and thoughts of those involved in making these instruments we all love so much.

When I "worked" - I didn't want to talk about "work" after I got home. So I would think they would feel the same. So it's always sort-of special (to me) when anyone from Fender takes the time to post something. We hear so little from them.

LOL, don't worry, these titles depend on your number of forum posts, it has nothing to do with real life! the ranks are just for fun, they don't mean anything!

It's amazing the amount of indignation and bruised ego's those posting ratings have caused. "What?" "Me an amateur???"

What he was referring to was this link which is where you manage your postal address and whatnot. It doesn't really matter as it's not related to the original question posed in this topic anyhow. I know it's all a wee bit confusing but, hey, this is version 1.0 of this community. Things will improve over time and we'll analyze what's working and what isn't. :-)

Admittedly, it's a *little* different in this case -- I mean, I'm a guitar and amp nut myself so I love talking about the subject matter. We work our tails off here but it's a fascinating subject matter and one that I'm more than happy to talk about *any* time. No complaints on this end!

confusing or not, it's still pretty good. From your reply, it sounds like this forum community is "a work in progress". Which means y'all aren't satisfied with what you have here and intend to keep improving it. That will keep folks coming back just to see what has been added or changed.

It's a good thing. I hope Fender will see fit to keep it a while.

As to being a guitar and amp nut - I have to plead guilty to being one of those too.:D At least where Fender Instruments are concerned. I've found they suit me better than any of the others.

I can believe that the Fender people "work their tails off". I tried to build a guitar one time. It ain't easy. Just the paint job took me a couple of months and it still wasn't really "right".

It sounds like you may be one of those rare individuals that "love" their work. If that's so, you're very fortunate. Enjoy it while you can.

And some of us may complain from time to time - but we still love and play the guitars and amps you folks build. It's kind of like a family. :)

Thanks for your reply.

The best to you. :D

P.S. - edited for; Just a note - "hobbyist" works fine for me. I was just curious when one post said you could change it. :)

Hey guys,

I really just wanted clarification about the registration process and figured if Fender was going to the trouble to ask what level of experience we had, it would show up in our profile, since they ask when we register. I had no idea that the rating system was based on posts. :oops:I guess I should have dwelt a little less on my experience and been a little more to the point, but being ignorant of how this was set up, well....

Confused? Yes. Mildly irritated? OK. Bruised ego? No. There are thousands and thousands of players out there who are WAY better than I am. I just try to keep my eyes and ears open and learn from them. I just lucked into a situation where I play every week for people as an unpaid amateur. Professional? Hardly. The only way I would even consider calling myself that would be if I actually got PAID for this and had to report it to the IRS  !

Most of us are on this forum because of our passion for guitars, especially Fenders, and want to exchange information and learn from each other. Even comments made in fun can be taken personally and I think we all need to avoid this in keeping with the spirit of this forum. Everyone has something to contribute, even asking "dumb" questions, because there's usually a bunch of folks (including me) reading them who are wondering the same thing. I intend to share what little I know from my limited experience and hope that I can help someone or learn from someone that shares my passion for Fender. 8)
