There's been millions, but what rock performance (specifically a song if you can pick one) sums up rock n roll in its greatness and rebellion that made you want to pick up an axe in the first place. Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit at Reading, The Beatles I wanna Hold Your Hand on the Ed Sullivan Show, The Ramones Blitzkrieg Bop at CBGB's, Santana's Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock, The Who's My Generation on that one tv show, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody at Live AID, The Arctic Monkeys I Bet You Look Good on the Dance floor live on tv, The Doors Light My Fire, Sympathy for the Devil at Altamont, Jimi Hendrix Machine Gun, the list is endless.................What is your opinion

Mine is Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock by Santana.

My dad saying we needed logs for the fireplace......

Seriously, there really isn't any one moment since most of my early influential music was live and I've lost count of the bands local or world reknowned.
Suffice to say that it was actually my parents friends as well as a couple of grungy looking dudes in equally grungy stetsons and boots pulling up to our petrol pumps in a rackety early 60's Mustang....None other than Dr. Hook ( Gales Ferry / Ledyard CT )......

PS...Should I mention Johnny Halliday....

There were 3 rock performances that were equally earth shattering in their content they were: 1. Jimi's Monterey performance especially the Wild Ting crescendo. 2. Jimi at Woodstock-his performance of The Star Spangled Banner-should be made the official version of the song. 3. Jimi at Fillmore East Dec.31 1969 Jimi's incendary performance of Machine Gun was without a doubt the epitome of electric guitar playing. Before he went on that evening he was told to basically tame down his theatrics and show how he could play without the gyrating etc. what followed was one of the finest performances of guitar work ever witnessed.

Then don't make statements that infer firsthand accounts...that's all...

I attended many concerts in the 70's, a few I wish I hadn't been so eager to attend but in the late 60's I was just coming of age and I can honestly tell you that the romanticizing of the 60's today is not the reality it was.

Pay the naysayers no mind, NC. I knew what you were referring to immediately -- Monterey is a well-documented event (both with soundtracks and video) and I know the majority of us here have seen/heard many of the clips or are aware of their existence.

Hang in there, kid......and I prefer your new signature image over the old one.

Rawk on!

Rory Gallagher, Irish Tour, "A Million Miles Away" has to be one of the best recordings of all time, just a beautiful song with a briliant display of guitar playing.

Check out Robert Randolph and Joe Bonamassa playing "Goin' Down" at the Crossroads festival. That's what playing guitar is all about boys and girls, having fun and rockin' out.

CPT. OBVIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Rolling Stones playing "Love In Vain" and "Sympathy for the Devil" on the "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" album.

Spectacular!

Not so much a rock performance, but none the less Adele's performance at the Brit awards last year was a seriously great and moving performance.

One of my all time favorites is Live Cream Vol II...just listen to Steppin Out and you will instantly know why he is the yardstick by which all others are measured. That one far outshines Hendrixs Machine Gun performance...by a mile! Don't get me wrong, love Hendrixs playing, but that one is just the apex!
