we have talked about woods. strings, tone (where does it come from), so i am asking every one do you think picks make a difference? I do i use the little dunlop stubby's 2.0 mm the purple ones i notice a difference in the thickiness and they seem to produce less picknoise. imo lets discuss

i really don't think there is a major difference between them besides certain thicknesses being easier to play certain things... i have yet to try one of the metal picks, but i don't think a pick is going to do much for the tone, but you never know

On bass there's a huge difference in tone between playing with a pick to playing fingerstyle, and to an extent there is also a difference between thin picks and thick ones, but not all that noticeable.

Can't really speak for guitar though.

Pick material will definetely change the tone a little bit, I really don't hear a difference between plastic pick thicknesses, except for thicker picks give you a better attack. Metal picks tend to thin out the tone some.

I prefer just average medium plastic picks myself.

Any of you guys ever use a Jellifish pick? It's not as amazing as the ads say, but it does add a little different something.

There's some sound clips and a vid there.

I use mine mostly on an acoustic.

Billy Gibbons also uses a coin, a Peso if Legend is accurate.

I think picks make a difference. I'd be willing to say there is a definite difference between Celluloid, Derlin, and Nylon. But I think I can tell the difference between an Abalone and Tortoise Shell Fender Medium. But I wouldn't be surprised to find it's all in my head.

Jazz III is the best for me. But there is not much difference. Just preference.

Hello Flamekaster,

I like fender extra-heavy whites
I've used them forever and experimented with
everything else under the sun but I always go
back. I just got some Dunlop ultex 1.2mm they're
nice, a definite tone deference-not better or worse.
Seems like they are more snappy or something.
I tried the coin pick made from a silver quarter,
didn't like it at all, I got the "fingernails on chalkboard"
syndrome from it, maybe I shoulda tried a peso but I
thought they were for the MIM guitars.

Cheers

Depends how you define "Big Difference"

It will make a difference, but how big will depend on the player and everything else in the chain from player to amp (on electric) or player to air moving on acoustic.

The pick you use will affect how you pick, it affects the attack, and some materials will affect your tone.

I use an aluminum pick on my 12 string--it's supposed;y tough on the strings, but it sounds brighter.

I normally use tortex or gator grips on my electrics (tick ones), but I do use other picks, and they do affect the tone.
I have some double picks I use that give it a pseudo 12 string sound when I'm playing clean, and a bit more bite with distortion. I also use a Stash wicked pick- http://www.stashpicks.com/product_info.php
Which gives an interesting edge to the sound as well.

I used to use agate picks which were great for pick harmonics--very easy with them.

But also consider the average listener won't notice the difference, but you will, and if it helps your playing and how you hear the song---go for it.

I don' t think theres a big difference in between one gauge difference in picks, but from thing to extra heavy I think theres a big difference in tone.

I have been using a Dunlop 2.0 pick.

I consider an extra heavy pick "light"....
