A lot of great music came out during that era guys.

Dittos!

When the then-contemporary alternatives are considered -- urban hip-hop, techno-pop, pseudo-disco, over-homogenized movie soundtracks, etc -- the "big-hair" bands come out looking pretty good.

Cyndi Lauper or Bon Jovi?

MC Hammer or Def Leppard?

Kenny Loggins or Night Ranger?

Pick your poison.

Nein..Nein...Nein...

Ballads from bands like Night Ranger, Ratt, Whitesnake ( all hair bands ) were just awful...most were the same three chords run thru a sequencer. It just didn't fit and the harder they tried, the more pathetic it was.
I think George Lynch is great but whenever there was a Dokken ballad....

Sort of like Devo playing the Blues....
Now there's a visual to twist your knickers.....

On second thought....my eyes are watering from that lingering overspray...

Inspiral Carpets, Happy Mondays, Stone Roses. Acid House, (proper) Techno, good Thrash (not Overkill), Guns'n'Roses, Soundgarden. Michael Jacksons Thriller. Bloody hell even the first two Pantera albums.

Yep hair metal was a bit pointless. Kind of like the Monkeys in a chart full of the Kinks.

Shhhh. I love hair metal. I've been listening to it forever. My mom would play Skid Row, Bon Jovi, White Snake, etc. Then my dad would play Anthrax, Slayer, Ratt, a etc. I'm familiar with a ton of the big bands from the 80s because of my parents getting divorced. (Long car rides, cassettes, then cds, now my dad uses iPod integration)

There are two hair metal ballads I actually like.

One ("Heartbreak Station" by Cinderella. What a stupid name for a band) because it reminds me of slow dancing with some chick whose name I can't recall.
The other song I like because it was a good song, "Love Song" by Tesla.

Other than that, I can't stand 97.4% of the material--ballad or not--that hair metallists played.

I spent most of the eighties listening to older music like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry, the Stones, etc., and newer stuff like ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Georgia Satellites, Joan Jett, etc.

Joan Jett is badass. She managed The Germs for a while. (Side note: When typing "Jett" I accidentally typed "$@!")

Thanks, man. I haven't chuckled that hard over a video in years.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
