Not to insult Austin, because the kid's got chops and I was very impressed (he could probably out-play me and I'm more than three times his age!)...He can play very well in a specific genre (SRV-style Texas Blues). He's got some talent and obviously some ability.

HOWEVER, SuperKid--you are extremely creative and very versatile in your playing. In your recordings, I have heard jangle-pop Beatle-esque stuff, some surf-centric jams, and several other elements.

Also, everything I've heard you play, you've either written or adapted to make your own...that gives you a leg up, not only in my personal viewpoint, but in the "bigger picture." You could always learn to play the things he played, but I would venture to guess that he does not have the songwriting ability or versatility you possess.

Also, you have a personal style that is influenced and informed by various artists...again, not to insult Austin, but he's copying a singular artist, SRV (or he might be copying a singular artist who copied a singular artist, such as Kenny Wayne Shepard...this is getting confusing )

I doubt he could wire up a complete studio setup or run the soundboard for his father's band (like you have done)...I'm positive he doesn't build his own effects or modify his own guitars like you have done.

I like Austin Crum's playing; I had heard of him prior to these videos, and I was mightily impressed then, too...but I want to hear his "second gear" (i.e., something original and outside of the SRV realm) before I declare him a better player and all-around musician than you.
