I put a new set of strings on my hot rod monday played for a while but the chords past the 6th fret sounded a bit off. so I broke the strings in for a few hours more and then checked the intonation and its dead on. but the chords still sound off. am I just nuts? even the low e string alone sounds funny to me. it goes dunk instead of doing  I even tried putting on another E string thinking it was just a dead string but i got the same results. do you think the battery being low on my turbo tuner could cause faulty readings? I might have to go to a tech for the first time in 7 years  it's just really frustrating

No, I'd say, not losing, but already lost.

Hard to argue with the better half.

Seriously, I love the threads that start off "I just changed something and now the sound is bad".

"Gee Wally, what changed?"

Check that the strings are sitting on the saddles correctly, and check the setup whenever changing strings, even with the same brand and gauge, but especially if you change brands or gauge of strings. Likely a tweak or two for the truss rod and/or saddles is all that is needed.

I went through it with a fine tooth comb for 6 or so hours last night. I am going to put in a new battery today so my tuner quits screaming at me to change it. maybe that will do something but i doubt it.

it also just occurred to me that my strings may be to old. I am down to the last 5 sets of my snake oil strings and I bought 40 sets 2 years ago  they are not sealed or anything so I suspect that might be the issue. some of the plain steel have spots on them in the package  so looks like I will be getting another brand to try.
but I am probably just insane :?

Could be bad strings. I like D'addario's mostly because they sound great but partly because the packaging keeps them fresh, so I can keep a bunch in stock and not worrying that they'll oxidize in the pack.

But when you say "past the sixth fret," do you mean higher on the necl (that is, closer to the guitar body) or lower on the neck (past the sixth fret closer to the headstock)? If it's the latter, you might be having a problem with the nut.

Also, checking intonation with a tuner with a dead battery is likely to produce inaccuracies.

from the 6th fret to the neck heel direction area :? brain fart. I should have vacuum packed the strings when I got them  I will most likely not be able to get them ever again, so back on the hunt

Do you guys like strings packaged individually in that paper (not air tight) or all 6 strings together in that sealed plastic (air tight)?

well it turns out a turbo tuner with a low battery isn't quite accurate  i put in a new battery and the intonation was WAY off. so lesson of the week is do not set the intonation on your guitar while your tuner has a low battery  I am so glad it wasn't the strings!

yea. but it doesn't do any good when your power supply is nowhere to be found  I could have made one but it was much easier to put in a battery.

Well fans who flock to see Taylor Swift sing live are evidence to the contrary.

yea I reckon my ear is a bit better than I thought it was. I sure had my doubts for a moment. also my wife saying I was just going deaf didn't help. she blames it on the amps, but her cat loves my baseman with the treble turned up all the way :D especially with the Tele bridge pickup

Lesson learned. Have an AC adapter or change batteries on a regular basis. Reminds me, change of season, everyone should check their gear for those seasonal adjustments.
