I can sing ok, but I don't sing much because I can't remember the lyrics  but my father gave me some good advice a long time ago. he said "sing while your jogging and running, if you can do that then you can act like a complete fool on stage and never miss a beat!" he says that is the fastest way to build up your diaphragm and gives you better overall control and projection. but just like any other muscle its possible to overdo it. but that's just what the old man tells me

The old man knows of what he speaks. 8)

Regarding recording your efforts, it is amazing how much worse it sounds to you when you play it back 24 to 48 hours later than it does immediately after you record it. When you hear it with fresh ears it will sound very different!

Like playing an instrument the more you practice vocals the better you get. My group does vocal rehearsals where all we do is go over vocal parts. It really helps!
