Is he a good guitar player in your opinion, ive heard from a few sources that he was really good off of the record, that he played minimal to match his music and the whole folk scene but in truth was big on scales and what not. Opinions and speculations?

On the record Id have to say he's a solid folk player, good fingerstyle, but a little more of the Cobain effect where he played with a passionate A chord instead of a legato line along the dorian scale in C etc.

He's definitely a good player, if he was playing massive complex guitar parts it would have taken away from the song. Its worth noting that he "re-used" some of his guitar parts though.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU0GqchCbeQ&feature=related

See?

PS, If he was to play a C dorian scale instead of an a chord he'd be out of key. B Dorian would be right, or if your heart is set on c being the tonic, it would have to be a phrygian scale. Just sayin'. 8)

He can blow away "Stevie", "Eddie" and a host of others in his sleep!

Seriously, he's 'adequate' and I doubt very strongly he's into all the theory stuff. Rather, if he likes what he hears while tinkering, he'll incorporate it into his material.

Check out his finger picking on some of the cuts on Blonde on Blonde-an album everyone should have anyway-on some songs it's absolutely fabulous such as on Fourth Time Around.

I think Dylan was a much better guitar player than some of his songs would indicate . Most of his music was played in the old Woody Guthrie style. It was very primitive like the folky artists of earlier generations. and for that reason he kept it simple and smooth. if you compare some of those guys like the old singing brakeman Jimmie Rogers, his primary focus was on the vocal. Just my opinion. Dylan has always been one of my favourites. 8)

----Danny,

That's a bit of a funny statement, considering what most people think of Dylan's vocals. My daughter, who likes pretty much all 60's music, and collects it herself, can't listen to him. As far as his playing ability, I don't think any serious musician could put in that amount of time on an instrument and not get pretty good at it. I'll bet he can hold his own on a round robin jam.

Listen to his acoustic songs prior to turning electric in Newport in 65.
He is an expert at hybrid picking on an acoustic.
A pick and a finger to get the rolls.
Listen to the rolls of him playing in songs such as Boots of Spanish Leather, One too many mornings and Don't think twice it's allright. just to name a few.
Yes, he is a fine guitarist.
