I wonder at the necessity of these entrepreneurs requesting one's date of birth. It opens the door to the potential for serious abuse, not that I believe FMIC truly cares. :? If they did, I expect that I wouldn't find the need to comment. Of course, one could argue that the option always exits to beg out. That's understood. It's the basic idea that concerns me.

Any thoughts??

It's a great way to research the demographics of who enters what. When they offer a Squier, a MIM or a MIA instrument, it is important to see whom they are reaching in terms of the bulk of their write-offs/potential customers. Consider: No successful for-profit organization gives freebies away out of the goodness of their hearts. Clearly, the return(s) outweigh the expenditure(s) for whatever their given objective(s) may be.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

Its also to filter out anyone who is too young to enter and not smart enough to lie about their age.

Both valid points of view which can be satisfied without the need for the precise month, day and year. That opens the door to potential identity theft. This is my concern.

Doc, Martians explanation seems like it could be the real reasoning, but honestly I don't know. I admit that I have wondered about it too though. Hopefully nothing untoward will ever happen to any of us as a result of giving our ages.

I have no issues with Martian's position. I have provided similar information under like circumstances when the inquiry ask for an age, or an age range. IMHOan actual date of birth is asking for too much. My wife, who practiced law for over 20 years, herself was the victim of identity theft due to the unscrupulous actions of an employee. I can't begin to tell you the complexity of the task involved in writing this wrong. As an aside, I also can't begin to tell you the value of a name and date of birth, with respect to the kinds of searches she undertook in the process of discovery. It opened a plethora of doors, the kinds of which most people believe are locked.

Which is why I was one of Life Lock's very first customers.

Anything worth having is worth protecting.

All good points, I can see why the company offering the prize would want to know but I would think just the month/year would be enough to do that. Leave something protected.

Maybe I'm just freaking out because my bday is kind of spooky this year.....11/11/11, yikes it sounds spooky to even say it out loud.

I would be more concerned if they asked for my SSN. Honestly if I really wanted to know anyone's date of birth, all I need to know is the name and a general location where they live. There is not much that is not accessable from the web and for the right price.

I believe the true intention for Fender to ask for a DOB is to ensure the name they pull as the winner is at an age that they can legally win a prize.

I live in R.I. so I'm not eligible for any of these giveaways. My info is safe. LOL!

I'm in Canada, so I'm usually out as well.

But I don't enter contests that require a birth date.

On another guitar forum I just won a distortion pedal--just needed to be part of the forum and post in a contest thread, so that was cool--no more info needed until I won, when I gave them a mailing address.

Lifelock may not be providing all the protection you think it is.
