I don't have a "go to" pick. I usually use whats lying around. I guess I have a preference to a medium weight pick, but I am not picky  about which company made it.

You don't have to stick to one type of pick, that's a myth. I use different types for different things. Dunlop gator grips, 1.1 i think it is, V-picks all the way up to a 4mm thick snake or psycho model. Also the wegen gypsy jazz picks are good but expensive.

For acoustic i use thinner picks because i don't like the sound of a thick pick on acoustic, too bassy and middly sounding and lacks clarity IMO, so i use Dunlop .88 nylon standards on that, a bit thinner but i like the tone better.

I also use herco thumb/flatpicks which are probably my favorite, they are like a thumbpick but the actual pick itself is shaped like a regular flatpick rather than a traditional thumbpick.

When I play out I play acoustic and electric, so I usually just carry a small assortment, depending on which guitar I'm on and whether I'm chording on the electric or playing lead. In the Music Room I just go with whatever medium pick is closest.

You don't have to stick exclusively to one kind. You can carry around a few for doing different things, its not like they're all that big.
I like Dunlop 1mm Nylons for most things, so I've got one of those and a Jazz III in my pocket right now.

it is true, you don't need a personal favourite. However, I have found that ever since I got my new amp and a complimentary dunlop jazz pick I have not used anything else. You should try lots of different picks, for they affect playing style, sound and the possibilities of what effects you can produce from your guitar. They are, after all, the cheapest part of your rig.

I agree that the choice of pick does matter. I have found that my taste in picks has gotten softer over the years. The picks I use now are Dunlop Tortex, 0.50 mm (red) but I used to use much thicker picks.

i find orange tortexs to work well, apart fro the fact they wear out really fast.
my fingers are another one

You don't have to use one particular pick. I use whatever is lying around. Including coins and bottle tops.

However, given the choice I do have one particular pick that is my favourite. Despite having others that are meant to be exactly the same made by the same people.

So whatever makes you comfortable. One bit of advice though. If you do pick a pick above all others. Get ready for a bit of disappointment when you lose it. Also get ready for a good bit of waiting till you find something nearly as good.

For the past 20+ years I've used Dunlop nylon .73 mm exclusively and have found that they are great for any genre of music I play and I've grown as comfortable with them as I have with my usual gauge and brand of strings.

Snarling Dogs, the black ones 0.88mm, I also like the purple thiner 0.66mm, and they have orange 1.14mm but I don't really like the stiff ones (I'll take a stiff drink anytime though). I've gotten very used to the textured feel and grip and keep one in my wallet just in case.
