Been listening to a bit of Steely Dan lately and just though it would be worth mentioning what an awsome player Jeff is, have a listen to the solos on My Old School or Bodhisattva and others, also found these instructional vids with Jeff giving some sound advice for guitar players 9 vids in total worth a watch, also check out his guitar Fender neck on a Roland ( I think) plexi Strat body with gizmo's to get lost in, for me anyhoo, do you think if the VG had the bells and buttons of this it would still be in the market, or knowing Jeff's tronics expertise was this a one off Jeff special ? a couple of switches below the neck pick up, a couple more along with knobs behind the bridge seems not many tricks left out on this one, probably just a light homework exercise for Andy or Martian getting to grips with one of them though, me I'm lost just looking at it, anyhoo enjoy the vids if you ain't seem them before http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBcen1w6NQs

Baxter was a fine player, but the brain-melting solo on "Bodhisattva" was played by Denny Dias, as was the electric sitar solo on "Do It Again," the angular leads on "King of the World," and lots more.

Larry Carlton not only played on the mid-period records (Royal Scam, Gaucho, Aja) and played some of the most memorable solos, but worked as bandleader on many Steely Dan dates. He's the man.

But, to stay on topic, Skunk's playing on "My Old School" is sublime.

As well as the Steely Dan connection, he was a member of Elton John's band for a while.

Listen to the albums "Blue Moves", "Rock of the Westies" and the live "Captain Fantastic" set from Wembley (it's a freebie on the Deluxe reissue of Captain Fantastic). His playing alongside the other 2 guitarists - Davey Johnston and Caleb Quaye - is sublime and incredibly tastefull.

I believe he also worked as an accomplished jet air space engineer..

Brain melting :) yeah that was the problem with Steely Dan ( shouting now) all the freakin line up changes :) hard to keep track if not a record collector which I ain't, seen similar line up mistakes in other Steely Dan threads

Prepared to be corrected on this one too, but kinda positive Larry played the one of the best solo's ever on Kid Charlemagne

Actually, it's missile defense. Mr. Baxter is periodically a theoretical engineering consultant to "DARPA" -- Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. That's not a secret, but specifically what he does for them is.

HTH

Denny Dias was a founding member of Steely Dan, but there wasn't a "line up" speak of after "Countdown To Ecstacy:" Becker and Fagen started recording with studio guys even during that album, and cut the band loose while recording "Pretzel Logic." After that, Steely Dan was the name under which Becker and Fagen recorded their songs, and the killer guitar solos were done by Carlton, Jay Graydon, Mark Knopfler, Rick Derringer, Becker himself... whoever fit the tune.

And yes, Larry Carlton played "Kid Charlemange."

Apropos of nothin', but those Elliott Randall solos on "Reelin' In the Years" are just amazing. '63 Strat w/ a PAF for the neck pickup straight into an Ampeg SVT. Who'd a thunk it?

Actually, it's missile defense.

It depends entirely on which side of the pond you are from. Two countries separated by a common language...
