for a first 5 I'll go with these Bros:
Larry (the mole) Taylor - Canned Heat
Louis E. (Thunder Thumbs) Johnson - The Brothers Johnson
Chris Glen - The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
Leon Wilkeson - Lynyrd Skynyrd
David Brown - Santana

Digression: Just curious -- why are you a "former" bassist? Granted, being able to play guitar has advantages, but so does playing bass. :)

I'm very surprised that nobody mentioned Stanley Clark until now.

I agree with most of the aforementioned...however, my top five (no particular order):

Tommy Shannon--played with Johnny Winter at Woodstock; SRV&DT (of course); Arc Angels; Storyville, and a thousand others...

Bill Wyman--not as melodic as Macca, but pretty dang cool...one half of one of the greatest rhythm sections in the history of ever.

Terry Jordan--great unknown from Fort Worth, Texas.

Sarah Brown--killer bassist from the old Antone's house band; she can hold her own against anybody.

Dusty Hill--mentioned by others, but I don't think people understand how much he contributes to that band, especially live. As great as BFG is (and he's one of my favorites), he should thank the Lord every day that Dusty is back there creating that melodic texture for him to run free upon...

She should be illegal!!!! I mean, good Lord!!!!! Um...okay, now, continuing the list:

2. Kim Deal (Pixies; Breeders)

3. Krist Novoselic (Nirvana)

4. Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)

5. Flea (RHCP)

Krist Noveselic is the most regular bass player of all time, no uniqueness whatsoever from any other grunge bass player, he sucks at bass worst than Kurt did at guitar and Kim Gordon admittedly said she knows she sucks, sorry to crush your 90s lineup alternative wet dream bro. Kim Deals always good though, she kinda started the under elaboration thing

Uhuh but put Krist in any other band, nothing.

As usual, Chef Wong is correct. Mr. Creep is wrong (as usual, when it comes to the subject of Nirvana).

Fuckit, I'm leaving this forum.
