I'd definitely go with Entwistle

Maybe
McVie (simple but perfect). I was listening to the Boston Tea Party album this morning. His bass playing is perfectly in time with the three lead guitars. Really not an easy feat live at what was a fair pace at the time.

Definitely
Willie Dixon (simply because of his song writing ability)

And Lemmy, because his Neanderthal style suits the music perfectly. He's not going to change. He's going to play three chords fast and make em work.

A question that bears thinking about because how do you rate a bassist. As a supporting player, doing his job so well you'd hardly know they are there until they stopped playing. Or as a pioneer where the rest of the band has to keep up.

John Entwistle,
Peter Quaife,
Phil Lesh,
Jared Followill,
Roger Waters.

John Entwistle
John Entwistle
Chris Squire
John Baldwin

And Roger wasn't playing the bass parts on the records. It was really David.

Thats quite interesting, well if this is the case then David or anyone else who happened to operate under the name Roger Waters.

I don't know all bassists, but from rock bands is John Entwistle on top. Then Roger Waters, Noel Redding, John Paul Jones, ....

EDIT: I forgot one awesome bass player: Flea

Hey guys and gals. As a former Bassist, I feel that they often get the short end of the stick as far as reconition is concerned. So, let's see who you feel are the top 5 players of all time. Here's my list;

1. John Entwistle-The "Ox", was a true beast on the bass and without a doubt, could blow away sevral guitarists as well if he chose to do so IMO.
2. Billy Sheehan-The EVH of the Bass, nuff said.
3. Dusty Hill- I'd hate to hear what Z.Z. Top would be like without him.
4. Bootsy Collins-Go and listen to some of his stuff with Funkadelic w/ George Clinton.
5. James Jamerson-The architect of the Motown sound and IMO, should be in the Rock n' Roll hall of fame. Hey Fender why you're at it, how about a signature model of his Bass, with the proceeds going to his family?

No John Paul Jones, uhm Geezer? Lemmy, how bout tht Flea, he seems okay yknow  Jack Bruce, cmon man the list is endless

1. Enwhistle
2. John Paul Jones
3. Bootsy Collins
4. Geezer Butler
5. Flea

Ah yes, the old top 5 argument. I'll define my list as the 5 bassists of whom I copy the most in no specific hierarchical order:

1. Flea
2. Les Claypool
3. Larry Graham
4. Cliff Burton
5. Roger Waters

The reason such great artists such as The Ox, Jaco, etc... aren't on this list is because I haven't got the skill to copy them...yet ^^
