The Big Muff Pi,Jimi is said to have used them at times. With the Muff and a bit of practice you can control the feedback to the point that it comes in the same key as the note you are playing but an octave or 2 above-just like Jimi did.

Ahhhh yes indeed, the Big Muff, would you say its still the best fuzz box out even though its been around since the 70s?

I would suggest a Univox Super Fuzz clone:

Wattson Classic Fuzz FY-2 ('60s) or FY-6 ('70s)
Supposedly the closest to the original.

Black Cat Super Fuzz

73 Effects Super Fuzz

MJM China Fuzz

A Fender Blender can get crazy as can an MXR Blue Box.

How could I forget Devi Ever?! Lots of different kinds of fuzzes and many of them are just nuts. I have the Vintage Fuzz Master and the Torn's Peaker, but what I really want is the Soda Meiser.

but I don't know how much feedback can you get from it.

EDIT: Please, haven't got somebody lesson how to control guitar feedback?

If that's really what you want, an almost uncontrollable fuzz then you want the Fulltone '70.

I need to clear up one thing-Jimi was a master of feedback but he was a master of controlled feedback. The thing that people found so amazing about Jimi at first blush was how he used feedback to his advantage and not letting it run away on him-a problem that plagued other guitarists from day one.So really Jimi never used uncontrolled feedback but made a study of making it sing along as a harmonic accompaniment.Give a good listen to Machine Gun from the New Year's Eve '69 concert at Fillmore East or The Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock.Despite all the massive volume coming from his wall of Marshalls never once did he loose control of the feedback, incredibly he tamed it and used it much to his advantage.

BTW he was using a Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face but it had been modded by Roger Mayer,so it wasn't your run of the mill Fuzz Face.Having said that I find that you can pretty well nail the feedback of The Star Spangled Banner using a Muff-Of course provided you are using a proper Marshall and a Strat.

Forget the big muff i'd say, it's a great pedal but if you're looking for insane fuzz sounds the one to get is a Z-Vex fuzz factory. The craziest fuzz sounds out there! useable crazy i might add! 8)

I've heard Jimi have used Big Muffs. Do you know what songs he used them on? I know he exclusively used Fuzz Faces the majority of the time.

I will always like the Blackout Effectors Musket fuzz the most http://www.blackouteffectors.com/?page_id=402
it can be outrageous or controlled. you can also tighten it up so that it sounds more like a distortion.

Depends what sort of Fuzz you like.

Smooth and creamy - a well sorted Big Muff Pie. (Santana or John Isley)
Hendrixy - one of his tech's products, maybe the Mayer Axis or Mayer Voodoo Vibe.
For fuzz toned sonic anarchy - Z Vexx. Chaos all the way :)
For nasty and raspy - look at a Fuzz face. A well sorted one will obviously give you Hendrix too.

For infinite sustain and feedback - try chaining 2 Muff Pies together (check out Be Bop Deluxe's "Crying to the Sky" which is Bill Nelson's Hendrix tribute..) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhQa7pJDYS4 ~ solos at 1.45 and 3.03 ~

@Bluesguitar65 : I don't know what cuts-if any-that Jimi used the Muff on but Mike Matthews-the owner of Electro Harmonix and inventor of the Muff-was a good friend of Jimi's and he has said as recently as an interview in this months Vintage Guitar mag. that he had gone into Electric Lady studios and had seen Jimi using a Big Muff in his effects chain.
