Lady Armadillo and I are sitting here at the Choctaw Event Center in Durant, OK...waiting for KWS to hit the stage...

Got a few (not so good) pics of his gear; mostly Fender backline including two of the '64 Vibroverb 1x15 blackface amps, a '57 Tweed Deluxe reissue) and a white tolex Hot Rod Deluxe...

I noticed some road cases with Rick Richards name on them; that would be cool if he's here, because the first rock concert I ever saw was the Georgia Satellites back in 1988...very cool player.

Cool man. I saw KWS a few years ago and he rocked. Walsh should be a nice treat. He can play with the best of them. Have a good time, can't wait to see the pics.

Enjoy the show with Lady Armadillo. KWS seems to have a much larger vocabulary than he did earlier in his career, should be a rocking time. Look forward to seeing some pics.

Ok, I promised this a few days ago, so here’s the review of the Joe Walsh/Kenny Wayne Shepard show at the Choctaw Event Center in Durant, OK.

I was worried when I walked into the facility, because it looked like an oversized high school gymnasium, and there was a lot of potential for bad sound in the room—metal walls, concrete floors, etc. A friendly acquaintance who had attended several shows was there and said it all depended on who was running the sound—it has been good and it has been bad. We were fortunate—the sound was good, and not too loud (which is a distinct possibility in a facility such as this).

Also, one other item: I had posted earlier that I was excited to see a road case with the name “Rick Richards” on it, because I hoped the former Georgia Satellite/Izzy Stradlin axeman would be there. He was not; there is a drummer who plays with Joe Walsh named Rick Richards.

Opening Act:
I am now a bigger KWS fan than I was before. My main criticism of the guy has always been, “I know you love SRV, I know you met him when you were seven, now quit imitating him and play something different on yer dang guitar!”

Well, he showed me something different during the first four or five songs of the show. Much more rock than blues, somewhat akin to the Arc Angels or Storyville…and speaking of those two bands, the drummer was very recognizable—Chris Layton of Double Trouble. He put on his usual amazing performance.

One surprise was a rocked-up version of John Lennon’s “Yer Blues”; Shepard played it like a jam session between Clapton and Hendrix. Pretty impressive.

The (fretless) bassist was Tony Franklin from the Firm (Jimmy Page/Paul Rogers).

I also felt bad for Noah Hunt…I realized how hard it must be to be primarily a vocalist in a band with very long guitar solos. What do you do during the axe show? Anyway, he’s got a great voice, and overall I enjoyed the show. It did veer off into SRV territory at points, but there was more of the other stuff, and I would go see him again for the right price.

Anyway, here’s some pics of the stage and gear:
Two blackface Vibroverbs (the recent ’64 custom reissue thing, not originals) and a tweed ’57 Deluxe re-issue:

Performance of “Blue On Black”:

Walsh had an interesting band; two drummers and a percussionist, three backup singers, a piano/keyboardist, bassist and second guitarist. The other guitarist looked like a young Mark Knopfler.

Joe played through a Dr Z amp of some sort and a blackface Twin Reverb (I could not tell if it was vintage or re-issue; it was very clean for a vintage and kinda beat up for a reissue).

Guitar player #2 played through a Marshall-esque looking and sounding amp called a Suhr (I had never heard of that before, maybe you had) and a vintage Princeton Reverb.

He started out very low-key, with “Life of Illusion”, which led to “Walk Away.”

As usual, his on-stage banter was funny. He played the title track of a new album that is “coming out in the first three months of next year or something”; it was called “Wrecking Ball”. He said, “If you’re only here to hear my old stuff, you might want to go pee right now…but it’s your loss!”

He also (humorously) grumbled about playing “Rocky Mountain Way” and “Life’s Been Good”. About RMW, he said, “Well, it’s inevitable, so let’s go ahead and play it and get it over with…”
When he started “Life’s Been Good,” he said, “I wanna apologize to some of you, because I know your parents probably played this song too many times, and it might have made you a little bit weird. So it’s kinda my fault that you’re weird, and I’m sorry!”

He changed guitars more often than Goodyear has changed tires, and some of his choices were surprising; several Ibanez shredder-style axes with EMG’s, a couple of Les Pauls (which I expected), a very nice but stock-looking Stratocaster (might have been a Custom Shop, but it was not outlandish or very fancy) and a bird’s eye maple Strat-bodied axe of some sort. He never picked up a Carvin (which he endorses) as far as I could tell, but there was one guitar that looked like a semi-hollow/archtop/f-holed/gator-skin-texture/Bigsby-equipped/P-90 in the neck, humbucker on the bridge/Les Paul-esque instrument of some sort.

“Let Me Be Your Personal Manager” and “Funk 49” video:

…and during the encore he played (by request) a little ditty called “I.L.B.T.” Those of you who know the lyrics to that song will laugh.

Nice write up SA. I've always been a big Joe Walsh fan, seeing as how the James Gang was the house band at our local club when I was in High School and I used to go see him weekly. The guys a real character. I have fond memories of those days. The red Tele with the set neck that I've posted pictures of in the Tele forum was supposed to have been Joe's. My friend that owns it is friends with his tech.

And the Suhr amps are from John Suhr. He used to work for Fender and went on his own. Here's a link: http://www.suhrguitars.com/
